Bore gauge

Currently stripping down a 300tdi.
I'm looking a buying a bore gauge, are there any to steer clear from, ie cheap eBay types?

why do you want a bore gauge?


a small internal micrometer will coer off on what you need but in realityyou wont use the all that oftenbb Id suggest you se if you can borrow a set

Even the cheapest telescopic gauge is a dimension transfer device, to which an appropriate measuring device (external micrometer) may be applied.

once they are locked, the accuracy is determined by operator skill, and measuring device.... To this day the Navy uses a device made of two bits of wood and a piece of string to do exactly the same job!! (Slightly different application and degree of accuracy!!!)

A good set of micrometers and telescopic gauges to about 100mm is very handy to have in the shed.... As is a cheapy digital vernier for quick easy to read rough measurement!!

I borrowed a bore comparator from a friend in an engineering company.
Set the dial gauge to zero on an unworn part of the bore, move to the worn part and the dial gauge gives the amount of wear.

The guy I borrowed it from had never used it (he got it secondhand years previously).

Do you know anyone who might be able to lend you one ??
