Howdy,
Can anyone advise where I might find a list of the design rules that would apply to my 1955 86"? I have no idea what I do and don't need to pass a pit inspection here in WA. IE seat belts? indicators? emissions? etc. Is there a manual I can purchase?

Thank you

I don't have a definitive answer, but one useful route is to have a chat with your local old school Land Rover mechanics. Firstly, they'll be able to advise you. Second, they'll be able to give your vehicle a check over before it goes over the pit. Third and more subtly, as I found when I converted my second MGB to RHD, the inspectors tend to be wary of enthusiastic amateurs but when a company they trust brings in a vehicle, while it still gets a proper inspection, it's treated less like a death trap. This cost me a little for labour, but my MG shop picked up a couple of things I'd missed and come the inspection, were able to sort out a small issue they'd overlooked and so it was drop the car off with them in the morning, pick it up registered in the afternoon.

Mind you, that's only one route and I'm also interested in the answers you'll get as I'll have to do this to mine eventually.

Your state government should have on line details of ADRs and when they came into effect. (Be prepared to wade through a lot of reading)

But just as a start, ADRs post date the end of Series 1 production by around ten years, so the only applicable ones would be the very few that are retrospective. Specifically, there is no requirement for seat belts on a vehicle of that age (which does not mean that they are not a good idea), but as a general rule, if fitted, they will need to comply with ADRs, but this will be a state rule, not an ADR.

Your best bet is probably to ask your registration authority what is required, although it may be necessary to go to a bit of trouble to find someone who knows what they are talking about when dealing with a pre-ADR vehicle. As a general rule, if the vehicle meets the requirements of when it was first registered (or in some cases manufactured) it will be OK, but there are some exceptions - for example, in NSW, two windscreen wipers are required, and all states require rear reflectors (all Landrovers have these anyway).

There are a few items that are really worth fitting, even if not strictly required, apart from seat belts. Probably at the top of the list is turn indicators, and, if used as a daily driver, a reversing light.

Hope this helps,

John
