Why the difference, if both 300tdi engines?

Hi guys, this is my very first post and its a typical newbie question. Have loved Defenders all my life, but now I am actually in the market to buy one. Pretty excited.


Am I right to understand that all 300tdi's are the same (all years and for both defender and discovery)???


I am wondering what the main difference is between these two motors in the photos a & b? They are both 300tdi's. Other than what I think is the air con compressor, are there things to look for to tell what year the engine is from?


And can 300tdi discovery engines go straight into a defender?

Then first photo is in a discovery, the second a defender. The engine is the same but the ancillary bits are mounted differently in some cases. Things like plumbing to intercooler and radiator etc.
