Good stuff mate!! Make the most of it...the smell, the excitement, THE SMILE.
This may sound a bit corny, but while the feeling will subside a bit, it never disappears. For 15 years I was with a company that rotated their new cars every 36mths. That's a lot more newbies than you would typically go through but I still couldn't wait to jump in the brick to get the smile back on the dial.
It's your ticket...enjoy the journey.

I had a 400km drive from the dealer to home. Just enjoy the drive, stop occasionally to take roadside photo's, try to wipe the grin off your face and don't forget it's a 6 speed box!

Try to vary your revs and speed on the new engine if you can. Ie don't drive the whole 300km in 6th at 2200rpm.
The other treason of thought is to give it hell during the break in as opposed to babying it.
Others might have a more educated reason behind the different methods.

Great news and congratulations. It seems to have taken less time to buy the Defender than to arrange a test drive! Did I miss a post or something - presumably the test drive was a success???

Thanks everyone, I cant believe I will have it tomorrow :D. I want to get going by 7.30am at the latest to get to Townsville by lunchtime. I managed to try a newish 110 locally and I just bought the one I am getting unseen without the test drive. I found the one I tried to have loads of grunt, the seating position is not perfect, but but longer seat rails will fix that. My new Defender 110 is light green with black leather seats and privacy glass. I had the non privacy glass windows tinted and a factory tow bar fitted. I decided on a personal plate too :) it is going to be DEF 007 (give me a wave if you see me around) , I thought why not have a bit of fun :D
I think the 300 odd kms home is going to be fun :D

Just home and I miss calculated it is more than 300km and I am quite tired but very happy. The car is perfect just one annoying thing, the sales guys took the car for a drive with me and when he got out he flicked off the seat belt and it hit the newly tinted from passenger window and it put a small mark on the tint film (very small really). He did not do it on purpose, actually he did not even notice he had done it but it peed me off all the same. Anyway he has been great and very helpful so I just let it go, but I do wonder if the mark can be fixed somehow?
I drove a the couple of hours to Cardwell and then the 2.5 hours home and no back ache!!!!:D
I love this car:D:D

Some food later I am feeling refreshed. I love this car :D. A few questions.. It was raining and there is quite a bit of noise from the rear as there is little sound dead insulation at the back. What do you guys do, is there a pre made liner for the back? Even a stone scares the bleep out of me it is so loud. What tire pressures do you guys run?
I have a feeling I will be doing quite a bit of driving in the next few weeks :D:D:D I cant believe I finally have a Defender :D:D:D AND driving for me with two shot discs had become a real pain in the butt I used to love driving but 40km and the pain of the sitting position became teeth gritting. Going to Townsville in my Nissan was horrible, but coming home in the Defender was a total joy with NO PAIN AT ALL in 4.5 hours on the road :D:D driving is fun again:D

We put drawers in the back and that quietened it a lot. We also bought some cheap carpet squares and have spread them around which makes it quieter and are easily cleaned.

Great to hear you are enjoying it.
For the noise some things I did included putting on front mud flaps, cutting up a foam camping mattress and yoga mat and lying it over the rear areas.
I also got some rhino liner sprayed in the rear wheel arches. Probably should have done the whole rear tray in retrospect. This made a huge difference. I also got rust proofing done and I think it made a minor improvement (might just be a placebo effect as well.
But to be honest you seem to get used to it.
As for the tyres I have cross contacts and they seem to love picking up and throwing out the stones no matter what pressure I try. Again I have just tuned out but every now and then you a loud ones come out of the blue.
Also I have taken a heap of chips out of my driver side tinting. For some reason my belt flies back way faster than the passenger. Took me a while to remember

Glad your enjoying it. You'll get used to the stone noises we hardly notice them now although every now we get a really noisy one which startles us but mainly we don't notice them. Tyre choice makes a difference.

I'd live with it - consider it a trophy rather than a scar - it wont be the last. I have several in that location ...
If you plan to take it off road then bumps and scrapes are a certainty. I'm sure you'll want it to look as good as possible for as long as possible BUT, that first scratch is a right of passage that you just have to get over IMO

Re. the noise, you can actually buy kits from England, but there would be cheaper ways. Another option is to buy some rubber sheeting and stick it to the wheel arches.

Yeah the stone chips can sound like a gun being shot inside the cabin.
I found that when I built my drawers, it reduced the problem a hundredfold...but I still want to get some bitumen based paint to do the exterior underside. There's a few solutions out there. Some use the spray, some use paint-on. I think most agree that bitumen-based solutions are the go.
Side steps
I had the LR ones but kept bending them and denting them so whipped them off and went to see Daniel at Mulgo. His rock sliders are awesome and look good too. If they're a bit exxy for you, he might know of someone with second hand ones....Daniel is awesome like that.
Drawer system
SO many options. Do some searching and have a look at some of the fantastic ideas people have come up with on this site. Check the Members Rides section as well as Projects and Tutorials. Best best is to go to Advanced Search and plug in 'Drawer', search for titles only and include the '90/110/130/Defender/County', 'Members Rides' and 'Projects and Tutorials' sections as the search criteria.
You will have HOURS of fun searching through all the wonderful photos and designs.
I made Monty's drawer system out of ply and it was massively over-engineered but very sturdy indeed. I used a design from Povman but gave it my own finishing with marine carpet and aluminium edging. If you're going for lightweight, you won't be the first so keep searching.
Other mods you might consider initially to make life easy on yourself:
 Cargo barrier
 Mulgo Rear door extension thingies
Mulgo seat extensions (I only have these for passenger seat)
Mulgo Ex Box (moves the electrics in and up and makes for a MUCH more comfy driving position IMHO)
 Mulgo Rear door gas strut
I know it looks like a Mulgo promo but the man really has thought of everything.
Enjoy, Chris. Love the look of your truck mate.

I was actually quite worried it would be a worse sitting position, just about my only worry related to the car, but as it turns out I had no need to worry it is a joy to drive. I have two discs low down that are very thin, that have collapsed straight and have not bulged out. Apart pain of a wrong sitting position due to the thin discs I get a numb area lower right back after maybe half an hour of driving that gets more and more annoying, then pain. Non of this happens in the Defender. I wonder how many people with good backs actually suffer back pain in the unnatural sitting position in normal cars?

I bought an ARB winch bar at the Sydney Caravan and Camping Show for about half what the Land Rover cost. Fitted it myself, but nearly did a back injury, so may not do that again. Also fitted more power sockets, never have too many.
I will be changing the steering wheel soon as I did in my TDi and it was great.

Re. drawers, we considered making our own, but ended up buying the Off Road Systems aluminium ones, which are light but very strong. They have one specifically for Defenders and it can be had in a couple of configurations. Excellent quality. Quietened the rear down too.
http://www.offroadsystems.com.au/pricelist_Landrover_Defender.html
I strong recommend a rear wheel carrier for the back door ASAP as it will avoid the door rattling and eventually warping under the weight of the wheel. We chose Mantec but there are several around. We imported ours directly, but Mulgo and APT also have them. The Mantec one we got just bolts up to holes in the rear bar, plus you drill out some rivets and slide bolts through the body. It opens in one movement with the rear door.
We added a rear door stay at the same time, also Mantec, to keep it open on slopes.
Very happy with both.

Ours came with an ARB bulbar already fitted. Seems super strong. I banged a tree with it in the bush one day and nothing happened, except the tree was dented.

Re side runners. Fitted LR ones to mine. The next day a bloke trashed the front of his astra, backing out of the space next to me. Not a mark in my runners. I hadn't intended to fit them but wife insisted. Lucky she did.
On the seats. My back has injuries from top to bottom, but I drove it from Rainbow beach to home in 16 hours, with no ill effect, and my little bloke next to me didn't complain once.
On the steering wheel. I elbowed myself in the ribs a few times until I adjusted the way I use it.
I like my ARB Bar too. Others look better but don't offer as much protection.

Non of this happens in the Defender. I wonder how many people with good backs actually suffer back pain in the unnatural sitting position in normal cars?

Hi Chris, congrats and welcome to the Defender world. Last night i dropped some friends home and they all of course commented enthusiastically on my Defender...and how they love the seating position. I agreewith you, it is the best seating position!
...I've driven Toyotas for work for years across northern Australia and ALWAYS had a sore back at the end of a long drive! Also from other cars with slouching armchair type seats and no firm lumbar support. This is a hugely underrated design issue that Defender has had right for decades. I'm on track for 50,000 km per year in my Defender and i agree, never have a sore back after a long drive. The upright seating position is also the best for visibility.
Hope you enjoy many a trouble free journey in your new Defender! I like the keswick green too, but i still love the many moods of my Indus silver.

Wow, 50,000 a year!! How many km do you have on your Puma now?
Is yours the 2.2 also?
Cheers

I agree, the seats are very supportive and I think their uprightedness is an advantage.
I find the same thing with beds - many mattresses are too soft and let the body bend excessively, causing aches.
We learnt this when living in Thailand where most beds are much firmer than we were used to here. At first we were a bit wary of them, but learned to prefer them to soft mattresses. Our camper trailer mattress is quite firm and I like it.
Incidentally, very sad to see one of the women injured in the explosion has died. Must be a really tough time in Ravenshoe right now. Thoughts and prayers to everyone concerned.

Thanks,
There was a town meeting this morning, a very difficult time.. Sadly it wont be the last casualty as some of the others have terrible injuries.

Hi Chris.
How's it going up there? I hope that the injured are on the mend and that you can relax a bit and enjoy your Defender.
 Cheers Billy.

Yes very sad and worrying. Burns can kill quite a bit of time after the accident so the number sadly will probably rise..
