Went to start the rangie on sunday only to find it had a flat battery. As it was parked on a hill it was easier to run start it (Backwards in reverse) that it was to jump start it (4BD1).

Anyway, I drive it for about an hour and turn it off to go where I need to go, come out and go to start it and nothing, no click from the starter motor, nothing.

So I check the two battery gauges, both batteries have enough juice to start the truck, or at least be able to have it turn over. Check all the fuses, there fine, think it may be the solinoid, so I bridge that, still nothing.

So I guess it is the starter motor, but what could have possibly damaged this in the events described above. Can anyone else think of what it might be.

try tapping the starter while someone is trying to crank it with the ignition key.....see if this makes the starter work.

you can tap the starter motor to get it to work or get a big screw driver and put it across the two terminals while some else turns the key. This will make the starter motor work but not for the faint hearted as it sparks alot

yep go the starter! or dont go the starter in your case :oops:
i had the same thing 2days ago with a brand new forklift!
multimetered everything, ok, wheres that bloody hammer!!!!
hit the starter body and that was that!

Sounds more than brushes or burnt solenoid contact.

I'm thinking crook armature. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Ignition switch,

Sounds exactly the same as the way my Rangie went.

Try repeatedly turning the switch all of a sudden it will go.

Check to see if there is power at the starter. constant 12v and the starting circuit.

if so then you have a dead starter.

Now here is and interesting point.
My Disco 200 that i had and the Fender i have both the starters seized.
combination of moisture and time.

I fixed the Disco one with lots of smacking and crc...

Fender one i pulled out and rebuilt it. Well lubricated and cleaned it as the brushes were ok.
Tested it on the ground and then put it back in. No problems since.

Takes a while to do it, but worth it.

Had similar a while back

Ignition switch was the problem.

To test whether its the switch, just run a light wire from the battery to the small spade on the solonoid.

Uh Huh, lack of current to the starter motor, these buggers suck huge amps. bad connections. dirty connections. auto or man, stick it in a gear or park and rock it, if the s/m is sus this will help to unlock it and as said a whack with hammer will unlock most solenoids and itinerant s/ms, have a merc outboard that shows similar, due to lack of use, but the hammer works every time. but as yours in regular use I'd go the connections, or even maybe a failed lead.
