A few months ago I bought a Series 3 Stage 1 after owning numerous Classic Range Rovers. Something I note with thie particular vehicle is the noise that the gearbox makes with your foot off the clutch. I have heard that this was a common problem with Stage 1s from new. I know the LT 95 was fairly agricultural this one works perfectly but I presume that the Layshaft bearings are just noisy. Does anyone else remember this with Stage 1s. It has only done 80 000 ks (yes it is genuine) in the last 25 years so I guess it is allowed to make a bit of noise.
Thanks in advance

If you mean with the gearbox in neutral and foot off the clutch, then yes, nearly all have an extra rattle.

Can I suggest that a major diffrence between the Stage 1 and the contemporary Rangerover could be the amount of sound insulation? (None in the Stage 1, considerable in all Rangerovers!)

Thanks guys the original question was asked 6 years ago and the gearbox has long since been rebuilt.
Perfectly quite after the rebuild

My 89 military 110 was rattling on idle ,foot off clutch ,Turns out it was the reverse idler selector rod , the thread was not lining up with the thread in the gearbox case .
I fixed it by removing the side plate then the wire and selector bolt putting the selector in the vice and a few medium hits with a 3 pound hammer reshaped it i suspect around 1 mm then re threaded it ,ended up with around 1mm of wobble ,previously it had 5 to 6 mm at the bottom where it connects with the reverse gear, an easy fix while the box is still in the vehicle ,

Any pics? The used box in mine rattles at idle too with foot off the clutch pedal. Idle stops when clutch pedal depressed.

That's an orthodox way of fixing it!!!!!
The easier way would have been to adjust it the correct way by unscrewing the threaded bolt that it pivots on and move the selector crossover further into the gear then thread the bolt back into the selector thread. Yours must not have been adjusted correctly on assembly.
You will find that most of the "rattle" you can hear at idle with foot off the clutch is the heavy clutch fork rattling around on its pivot. And there is also the 4 cylinder torque impulse rattle through the gears.
