Hi, just got my Disco4 MY15. Ready to do some mid level off-road and towing caravan. Any recommendation what should I equip? I had a CB Radio, a HEAD Rest DVD system, crash cam installed. Next on the listed will be a good in dash Navigation with some off road map, internet radio and iOS or android app can add on. Apparently, Disco 4 MY15 had limited choice, can do after market GPS through an HITV interface but only GPS, nothing else. Any one got some latest gadgets installed? Then, I will add in bull bar with winch if I decide to go further, plus roof basket or long range tank. Mine is TDV6 SE, does it come diff lock?

Any recommendations are much appreciated? Melbourne base installer need for those gears.

:)

Cheers,

Gary

The diff lock is a factory option so if you don't have one then you will have to wait until some third party company makes one. I'm not to sure about what you mean by internet radio in a car? Most cars that I know don't have an internet connection unless it comes from Mr Google. What you may mean is DAB+ which is digital radio and again it may only be a factory option but I suggest you contact a dealer to find out if you can add it on later. I know it will depend on what radio you have in the car now though.

For the navigation side of things you are probably stuck with the in dash display unit you have as it controls so many other car functions that it is difficult to replace, I can however highly recommend getting a 7 or 8" android tablet and OziExplorer software. A set of Hema maps seems to be the go for most people or off road use. You will find it far easier to plan your off road trip if you also have the PC version of Ozi so you can use a mouse and a comfy chair to do all the hard work and then transfer your waypoints to the tablet later.

For street navigation the same tablet can be used and I run Sygic (but many others as well) and down load any map set you want. The best value if you think you may go overseas is the World map set and I think it's 60 euros. Aust & NZ will cost about 40 euros.

With both of these products they offer free upgrades for the life of the product and no I don't work for any of them, just a reasonably happy user.

For the tablet you'll have to put it somewhere and you could look at windscreen mounts or various floor mounting systems like RAM mounts. There are discussion on this forum you could look up for further info.

After saying all that I haven't got my D4 yet, it's due in August. In the meantime I'll chug along in my D2

Rod.

Hi Dis4,
Unlike you I have a D3, maybe one day........... Bull bar = good idea, if you are planning on a winch later on make you initially get a winch compatible bar, maybe also consider a dual battery set up of some description especially if you are hooking up to a caravan and plan on having a few additional accessories. Snorkel is a good option prolongs the air filter life by reducing the dust that gets sucked into the air intake.

Long range tank = rear wheel carrier of some description unless you plan on throwing the spare into the roof basket. Bull bar is also handy for any antennas, others have come up with alternative mounts.

Good quality wheels and tyres, very important for successful trouble free touring.

Usual rule of thumb is that for every accessory you fit it takes possibly three more to make it work properly.

Customising a LR Discovery is like the saying goes, life is like a box of chocolates............. you can just keep on going until the money gives out. What you fit first can be important so maybe think about where the end game is, you don't really want to be paying someone later down the track to take something off you have already fitted to get access to a mounting point or something else hidden by say the LR tank.

Hi Gary,

For towing, I suggest you get yourself some decent longer mud flaps. The OEM units are expensive and useless.

iPad with Hema is worth the $$$. Bull bar and decent winch with remote control has been a big plus for me.

Other things to consider:-

1. Mitch Hitch for towing. No.1
2. Traxide Dual battery system
3. Safari Snorkel, no Chinese crap
4. For long trips, Kaymar dual wheel carrier and LRA tank
5. Better tyres, 17 or 18 inch, BFG KO2
6. UHF CB, Uniden, stick with good quality antenna, raised ground-plane with stainless steel whip with loading coil, do not get fibreglass whip and crappy Chinese brands and use dual screened H&S Coax cable.
7. Roof rack for ancillary cargo, front-runner is very good.
8. ARB 2m x 2.5m awning.

Congrats.

Firstly, what spec is your Caravan?

How wide is it? Does it have a reversing camera system?

What is its front tow ball weight, when fully loaded? What is its GVM (overall weight)?

What tyres and wheels does it have?

Are you going off road with the Van? And staying out for how long if doing so?

Does it have solar power?

What batteries does the van have, how many, and what charging setups does it have?

Before recommending adding to the D4, IMO its best to understand what your towing and where, to understand what you might need.
