A mate sent me a link to these fabulous photos by a gent, Tim Arnot ( do not know of him but love his work. )

The photos are on the Short North, with lots of 38 and 60 class and a couple with a 38 double heading with a 60 class.

I was wondering if you knew him Jim. Right time, right place, photography and trains as hobbies.

Thanks for the link Drivesafe.

Unfortunately no Ian, I didn't know him, but a lot of those photo's such as the one taken at Toronto of tank engine 3076,which is not far from my place do bring back memories.:D

ps. Love the large photo near the bottom of 3813, 6041,5920 and 60xx passing each with smoke going everywhere, good shot, that!!!

Hi Pedro, and I worked the last 3 years of steam on NSWGR and I hated steam locos for that very reason, they were filthy.

Irony is that the locos I liked working the most, were actually dirtier than steam locos and these were the 46 class electrics.

When you changed over with a crew on a steam engine, the first thing you and the driver did was get a bucket of hot water, some cheese cloth and soap and you washed down everything in and around the footplate and cab.

With a 46 Class, because they were so incredibly effective at what they did, they very rarely needed to go into a depot, so they never got their cabs cleaned.

As a result, you found you got dirtier working on them.

What a twist!

Yeah, I remember as a kid in the 1950's, standing on the bridge at Whitebridge watching the coal trains or the "Belmont Express" pass underneath. Looking down on the engines, the thing I do remember is how dirty they were.:D

I saw a photo 6042 amongst that lot. I helped to Prepare that one for the Lachlan Vintage Village in about 1975 or 6 I think, and got to ride on the footplate between Parks and Forbes. Great fun for me but I would hate to have to have worked the thing.
