So today I got "Barry" back from Bruce Davis performance. I left him there Tuesday afternoon to have a front mounted intercooler installed, egr shut off and blanked, decat, 30mm terrafirma wheel spacers installed and a rear shock to hold the boot door open.
Remap, love it. Absolutely love it! I loved driving the car before, now it's even better. Throttle response is great and feels like their is unbelievable torque down low. No longer does it feel like a lethargic elegant but rather a bull pulling a plow :)
The spacers, love em. I have a normal turning circle. Should be like that from factory. I don't want to hear the illegal crap, cause I don't care....lol
Overall very happy. Bruce is a gentlemen and I highly recommend him. Thanks to him and the team at Davis performance!

I sent my MY13 2.2 ECU to Bruce Davis six months ago to get remapped,
Bruce advised because i did not fit an aftermarket high performance inter cooler, they only did a mild remap, and if I decide to buy the high performance inter cooler later, they will remap at not additional charge.
Was the mild remap worth it, yes in deed, over 1800 rpm it feels like a GO switch has just been flicked on.
It can now pull uphills while remaining in 6th gear with no issues.
Recently tested on the Simmo dunes where it pulled well up the dunes without changing to a lower gear.
Even the mechanic at Land Rover advised that's how they should go from the factory.

Just a word of warning, while remaps are good (got one myself) loading up the engine at low revs in big gears up hills (holding 6th up a long highway type hill for example) isn't good practice and will result in very height egts and potential limp mode cut outs.
An EGT guage will quickly illustrate what I mean. You can build high egts with a standard map too, but the lack of power often means you change down sooner (which then drops your egts).
Not saying don't enjoy it, just something to be aware of is all.

I was going to get dyno before and after but it was to expensive. Considering I former out 4.6k for all of the listed worka I really couldn't afford the extra 500 for a before and after dyno run.
Bruce has to have the cars dynoed externally as he does not have a in house dyno.

Glad to hear you are happy. I also had a BD 'medium' chip upgrade + intercooler + exhaust + boost thingie recently. What a difference. Just watch your exhaust temps though. Mine will pull hard up a hill in top but the egt's climb quickly to 650 deg. Changing down to 3rd gets them back under control.

It's funny you should say that, because I actually asked Bruce whether I should be worried at all about egts. He said no, it will be fine.
Now you guys are telling me this I'm starting to wonder and am curious. I am going to have a egt monitor installed and see whats happening.
Considering the front mount and decat I asked for a conservative tune to avoid potential problems.
When we were test driving he actually told me to put it into 5th and climb this long hill at 70kms. I was amazed with how much torque I had on tap. Now you guys are telling me that this is not a good idea.
How long ago was your car tuned and is it a 2.2 or 2.4?

How does lanox go with rust that may be present? Does it neutralize it?

I had Bruce fit a new intercooler, exhaust, EGR fiddle, billet VNT turbo and remap to my MY15 90. I then fitted slightly taller tyres. The end result is fantastic. Hwy fuel consumption has dropped by 0.8lt/100km, over taking is effortless, and where as before 1st was just too short around town unless it was on an incline, now it is perfect. The tune so far is only mild as the 90 only had about 2500km on it. That said I had it dyno'd before and after and power and torque are ~35% more than standard. Once it has 15k on the clock I will get Bruce to make it work a little harder.

Was your exhaust decat with all mufflers removed?
In other words straight through exhaust?

I get why some of these performance mods are being done, but why are you guys doing them to brand new vehicles, which still have years of warranty ?
Surely after that exhaust turbo IC there going to reject your claims if anything engine or driveline related decides to pack it in, and rightly so.
Also why unless your trying to turn a defender into a sports car, change the turbo the standard variable geometry turbo is pretty good, keeps the boost steady pretty much all the time with virtually no lag?
Please don't take offence in the way I've asked these questions I'm just interested.

Puma doesn't have a VGT standard....
I'm about to stick a vnt on my td5, not because I want a race car but because I want to overtake things without screaming its head off and not need 5km to do so.
However the warranty point raised is very valid ;)

Beg to differ. My 2.2l TDCi 2013 most certainly has VGT, and came standard.

From trawling through the BAS site it seems that the stock TDCi VGT turbo is suitable for their 150hp and 170hp tunes.
No need for any component uprates for the 150hp tunes. Need (or highly recommended?) to uprate the intercooler for the 170hp tunes.
Above 170hp it seems intercooler, air intake mods, and uprated (hybrid?) turbo is needed. (Perhaps more mods depending on how much hp you want...)

I have a serck Motorsport IC sitting in my dads shed which after fitting I don't use (if anyone is keen to buy it, it seems like a very good quality unit), it's a closed fin type, and I use the vehicle off-road a lot, i reckon it would get clogged with dirt pretty easily. My other concern is when I fitted it, from what I could see it seemed to block air flow to the radiator a lot, I've allready had people on this forum tell me that that isn't the case but I can't see how it wouldn't especially when it got bit of mud in it. I run a egr closed only remap on my 2010 2.4, I have a tuned remap on my tuning box but I choose not to use, as the egr closef by itself smooths out the throttle and makes the car drive better.have a terrafirma decat pipe (to reduce egt)which I think is all that needs to be done to the exhaust as its already pretty big. Plan to put a pyrometer in soon then maybe I'll use the tuned file but honestly I don't think it's needed especially Off-road low range where that extra power is more likely to break something.
Just my thoughts but I think people should have a think it about before just going for more horses.

I've got 9 months left of warranty. After 3 rear diffs, front prop shaft, 1 clutch, gearbox output shaft, gearbox shims, 1 gearbox, I finally felt like it's been sorted. Basically have had a brand new drive train installed.
That's why I have done these mods.
It's a lot more pleasurable to drive.

Hi Stewie,
Yeah a bigger intercooler should reduce EGT's, but the extra turbo boost and power would negate this a bit, compared to a standard tune and intercooler.
Removing the cat is supposed to help as well.
Im planning to change the thermostat to a lower temp at some point too, but I dont expect this to have any real effect on EGT's, more for a 'safety margin' in hot weather.
Cheers

As Tombie pointed out, if you're a bit "mechanically unsympathetic" and really lug or labour a car in high gear at low rpm, it's not just the high egts that result but the rest of the drivetrain that won't really thank you for it either.
At lower rpm there are fewer engine pulses, so each one is bigger, resulting in higher levels of torsional vibration and more potential for driveline issues.
Given some of the issues owners have had with backlash/replacement diffs/fretting of driveshaft and hub splines and so on, I don't see why you'd do it.
Coming from a Tdi disco, I'm as guilty as anyone of using the 6th gear in the Puma at lower rpm than I should, but there are 5 other gears to choose from....! :D

So true. I also recorded an almost instant 5 degrees difference in coolant temperature between 5th and 6th gear at about 80km/h on the flat.
It seems the puma engine really likes to be doing its work above 2000rpm.

And the intake temp. Try 16 degrees ambient and ~50 degrees at intake manifold .
Drop a gear, let the revs come up, less turbo boost needed and the intake temp drops by ~20-25 degrees!
It'll be interesting to see how much difference the Allisport makes. See if this "LIFT" technology lives up to the hype!
