Anyone used both? Hema detail look a little clearer or have they just spent more dollars on the video?
Going to the cape and thought it would be a good idea to get either of these for the for the trip. Just can't decide

I bough Memory Map for $1.29. That is what we used on our recent 6,000k trip to S.A.

I am not sure if you have narrowed it down to two. I am in the same position for scouting what maps to use.(also the unit to install). The most knowledgeable salesman that I have come across from a specialist communication company was recommending Ozi Explorer and said they have workshop days that can be attended to get the most out of the unit. That kind of backup from the distributor that could then clearly differentiate between units carried a bit of weight with me and I am leaning that way at the moment. Most distributors know little more than the price.
I will be interested in others findings/ experiences like others on this thread as it is a reasonable outlay and I would like to get it right.

Hi,
I run Ozi, and have just upgraded from CE to Android.
What an improvement in the interface with the new hardware.
I installed the Hema App a few days ago, and am still playing with it.
Hema allows a browser interface to an online gallery area where tracks/routes/waypoints/photos/trip reports can be stored (private or shared)
Hema is limited to two maps covering Australia, 1:250k and 1:M. They are good maps, and Google maps/satellite and OSM can be overlayed with transparency adjustment. For off line use, selections of Google can be downloaded.
Hema can synchronise your tablet with routes/waypoints you create on the pc browser interface - very nice. If you have internet of course.
Ozi can do this off line by copying files from pc to tablet on a usb cable or bluetooth.
Ozi files can be accessed, Hema is a bit obscure - not sure where they are yet.
Ozi lets you scan and calibrate your own maps, and there is a wide range of maps around to 'share'.
I will probably run both as each has unique areas of usefulness. Of the two, I think Hema would be easier to learn to use, but Ozi has so much more versatility.
Cheers

You can download Hema maps to your device for use when not connected to www.

Hi,
Yes, there is a selection of 4wd maps available which are not network dependent, as are the 2 base maps of Australia.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Mudmaps stitched up their customers by killing off Mudmaps HD when they bought out Mudmaps 2.
That was $140 down the drain after two years.
Who's to say they won't do it again and bring out Mudmaps 3 and want you to pay all over again.
Don't touch them I say.
Go Hema

Hi, I bought a Navman MY450LMT and bought the 4wd maps for 49.45 and installed them. I haven't used it yet but seems to have a very comprehensive listing of maps and destinations as well as heaps of 4wd POI's. Just for ur information.

Interesting little experiment at the weekend when out with the BIL in his 80 in the hills behind Lismore (the Defender was at home in Brisbane, but I'm sure it would have gone everywhere the 80 did, probably with less revving too).
He has an iPad with Hema maps, and he also has a collection of the old Forestry paper maps of the same area, so we had them both out.
While the Hema showed the main tracks, the old forestry maps had many other tracks, often disused.
I believe Forestry has itself just gone over to GPS maps and is not using its paper maps any more. They are definitely more detailed, so I recommend grabbing them as soon as possible before they disappear. I saw a collection in Bookworld in Lismore the other day and they are available at other places. Maybe Forestry still sells them.
The Hema has advantages of showing your movement and setting way points and so on, but for really detailed knowledge, it seems the old forestry paper maps are the way to go as a backup.

As I said a while ago 'Memory Map' via the apps is what we have used for a year with terrific success

I am new to using a tablet for navigation, have downloaded both Ozi explorer and Memory map. Memory map's map does not have enough detail and says you can bring in other maps. I need a source for more detailed topo / off road maps.

You can buy topo maps and lots of other maps from the map store on Memory map. I think you must only be looking at the free 250 k geoscience map.

I just downloaded the app for IOS and it seems to work wonderfully. Mine is a IPad mini. I have not had any trouble finding forestry maps/roads recently in Victoria.

Well there are a lot of choices, but having used a number of them over the years on various platforms there is no one does everything I want.
Oziexplorer in the day with Windows Mobile/CE was probably did the best for me. But they seem to be slowly fading and still haven't properly managed to make the jump to the android/iOS world. There is an android app but it's not available through the Google store and last time I looked it was still missing a bit of functionality.
I did buy memory map 2 when it was on special with a 25% off iTunes card which made it good value at the time. What I liked about it was it had a large collection of maps, including one which used open street maps as a base, and you could easily import your own maps/imagery using their free PC software. But there were some idiosyncrasies in the design which annoyed me, for example way points could only be exported one at a time and if you wanted to export them or your tracks you always had to go via their web site and couldn't export or email directly. Support was prompt but when it came to feature requests or fixes, nothing much seemed to happen. As Naviguesser mentioned they have the habit of making you pay the full price again when they do a major upgrade. They have offered mud map 2 users a rebate through PayPal but not much use as I don't use it. The major change I can see with mud maps 3 is there is a lot extra 25k mapping included, so certainly good value compared to some other packages which bill you extra for map packs.
Memory map is essentially free and I do like the interface and layout (at least for an old version I have). Major difficulty was I couldn't easily import custom imagery or maps for work.
I think Hema is memory map rebadged with their maps added. There are 2 versions, the 4wd one has a lot more maps included, while the cheaper one has access to some on line map data. Both have extra map pack for purchase in app.
If you are happy to use standard govt 250k maps then have a look at PDF Maps which is free on both iOS and android. The 250k geopdf topo maps can be downloaded for free from the geoscience Australia web site. This is the one that I'm currently using most of the time.
Cheers

I use Memory Map with the 25k topo set available at their website plus the Hema map set. You can't get much better in my opinion. I have Ozi as well and never open it anymore. People think Ozi is cheaper because they can get their maps from pirated sources off the internet. Proper decent maps are the most expensive part of the equation. The Memory Map option is more flexible because I can run the same maps on PC, Apple ios and Android. The apps for each are either free or a nominal cost. Forget Mud Map, I tried them a few years ago and they were terrible. The forums are full of unhappy customers.

Hi Mike - I've had a play with Memory Map on my iPad and it looks really good. I already have the Hema Maps Dvd but can't see how to import them?
Any tips on importing maps and what formats are possible?
