View Full Version : What to grow on a shaded wall?

The neighbours, to the north, are building a garage in the fence line.
It has been suggested I grow a creeper on the wall. What to grow? What will grow in the shade?
Don't limit your suggestions to creepers but limit them to what grows in the southern latitudes The suggestion of banana trees is not helpful.

Hang some purlins of the new wall and have a new carport yourself.

Buy Artificial boxwood hedge, Box hedge and Fake Plants | Designer Plants (http://www.designerplants.com.au/)
it 'grows' anywhere.... green allways... no water....

You think that hasn't crossed my mind?
A 101 and the BAE trailer are parked there already. And plans to mount a gate are being drawn.

Hmmm......
A bit outside of the box.
Nah. I'd rather have a brick wall than fake plants.

Moss & lichens grow well on my shaded wall. Just add some water.

Stag Horns do well in the shade. Bracken underneath would look good too.

Do not plant a creeper / vine - it will curse you until you rip it out. It will grow into every crevice / crack, into the eves and be a pain in the backside from all the pruning you will have to keep up with.
I have been told if you want moss / lichen to grow spray the wall with milk first.
Or cover it with some ornamental iron work.

Yes. Great idea. Maybe a couple of tree ferns as well.
I wonder if I can plant something that fruits?

Nah. I'd put one or three of those the other side of the house.

I'd be wary of growing those! I had one from Supercheap a few years back... it only lasted about 3 months - the sun ate it up and spat it out - all over my yard! the tarp/cover that came with the kit was rubbish. Maybe this brand is better I don't know.
