discoII spring upgrade

soon to fit winch etc, thinking i might do A 50MM lift at the same time. Thinking Browns springs maybe with Rancho shocks. Any clues from those who know please. No ACE, no air suspension.
Is it difficult to do the springs at home?

Hi Wardy,

Dont know of Browns springs, but there are better shocks for Landies than Ranchos (IMHO) check out discoweb.org or the D2 yahoo board and ask some opinions

You can do it at home if you have some basic tools and good solid car stands, although its a darn side easier and quicker if you can use a hoist, Ive done about 1/2 a doz suspentions over the years both leaves and coils all with trolley jacks and car stands. :wink:

I have the Old Man Emus. 2 inches and fantastic on dirt. They love a haul on corrugations, I run 265 70 16 cooper ST's too and am very happy with the result, ARB Bar on the front and a big load in the back is the best. A bit bumpy empty around town but pretty fun with the lift!

I have the same set up on my D2 and agree it is great on dirt etc when loaded and is a bit harsh around town when empty. According to ARB they fitted the hardest springs in order to take a heavier load, which it does very well but I find it really harsh as a daily driver on 255/65R16 Michilens. What do you run and any tips on improving the ride short of letting the tyres down!!??

Top set up when it is bouncing around the bush though!!

Browns Springs are great cause they are custom made so you can choose your height & spring rate. I have my front springs at 150lb and 3" taller than standard which gives me a 2" lift and is perfect if you have ACE.

If non-ACE then I would go 180lb on the front and get them made about 1" taller than standard for a 2" lift.

On the rear I would go around 300lb but not sure of height as I have air bags at rear so have never got them.


Stay away from Rancho's, they really suck on a Disco, they are not valved correctly for it. I run Tough Dogs (just the standard 41mm) and they are great and the larger bore help heaps on corregated roads and never heat up.

thanks to those who have responded so far! I have been avoiding the OME option as I think its a bit exe for what you get. The harsh ride around town would be a prob also as I use the car for work and carry clients around a lot.
Thanks esp for the advice on the Rancho's.
I run the Coopers too by the way.
