It's a BMW M62 engine so there's plenty in wrecking yards.

Even eBay has quite a few engines listed & freight, while probably not cheap, would be easy enough for a wrecker to organise.

Graeme Cooper Automotive in Sydney, hold a secondhand BMW engine in stock for exactly that purpose.

There must be BMW wreckers near you even if you have to go to Brizzy to pick one up. (The other option is a Statutory write off vehicle from the insurance auctions)

I have been total engine in Range Rovers was modified to suit by landroverWhile some of the bolt on bits might not be the same, the basic engine itself is.
You might need to strip down the BMW motor to a basic long motor & build it up again using your RR bits.

When LR couldn't supply parts to repair Range Rovers, we used the equivalent BMW part - easy when you're at a dealership dealing with both marques.

Mechanic plus MR rover said bmw motor needs too much modification

Rang and emailed British Off Road and Ritters both have not called back

Did enquire about BM engines but high KS low warranty

Graeme Cooper Automotive in Sydney, hold a secondhand BMW engine in stock for exactly that purpose.

Get in touch with Graeme Cooper Automotive. Explain where you are (not local) & that you've been told that they fit the BMW engine to RRs.
From all reports, they're a decent company so they may well help you and your mechanic with the ins & outs of the job.

Any differences for off road capability will be in the oil sump/pick up area which you have on your old engine.

Mate you can borrow my P38 for a week or two while you're sorting the L322 if you need to tow the horses.

My L322 doesn't have the tow electrics module.

A quick internet search shows that you need to use an X5 motor & swap the sump & front covers over. Probably other bolt on bits too I'd imagine.

That is just terrible news eumundimerc. It must be shattering for you.....having such a wonderful car but which can't be repaired plus the loss of the cars value.

Your situation also puts a whole new [negative] perspective on buying a BMW powered L322 V8.

Think your problem is that this is a BMW engine. Special tools required to do rebuild and they are not on general issue. This is normal BMW practice to keep you in dealer network. Even in UK these are difficult to repair know of only 3 places which could do the job that are not dealers.

Depending on the cost and how much you want to spend , could you consider a different engine?
Anything from a 6.2 petrol v8 to a (after 2007)6.6 duramax tdv8. These are common swaps in certain jap 4bies. Even a later model BMW v8.

Try the bloke below. he is a well known BMW independent who IMHO would have the knowledge to fit a BMW motor and may be able to find one..

Another issue to consider is the overall cost.
If a fully functioning 02 or 03 RR is worth $15-25,000 before negotiation,is it going to be an over investment doing a $8-12,000 engine swap?
If you sold the body with the kaput donk for $1-2,000 you could buy a similar model. If it was still drivable , possibly trade it on a newer model, so the stealer offers you $8,000 and the repair was going to cost $12,000 means you have $20,000 to spend, or a $12k change over. If they offer more, like $15k then your into a $27k region.

And if you want to spend a bit more on a trade in, maybe look at a RR sport as they have the same max trailer weight, but are more efficient with the tdv6/8 options and easier to park as a bit smaller, all genuine reasons to trade an 02 RR on a 07-09 RRsport .

The Car Dealers Australia wide warranty only ended up paying around $2000 they provide warranty to a lot of prestige dealerships

You don't expect problems but check dollar amounts covered and don't rely on dealers advice

I had only done approx. 4000 ks since purchase and was lumbered with big bill still

at least have motor which is like new with matching numbers

When looking for a car last year, I was amazed how much an after market warranty cost for such little benefit, once a car had done modest km ie over 100,000km. I suppose from the insurer's perspective its risk v net return.

Good to hear it's going well.

.
Those aftermarket warranties are a gold mine for the seller and poretty useless for the customer. I have read some horror stories and had an acquaintance who tried to claim on an engine once, not worth the paper it was written on, he followed the recommended service intervals by licenced mechanics also and he had it added on his hire purchase loan!.
The recent dealer we just bought a car from told me straight out he doesn't offer those aftermarket warranties as they are useless.

eumundimerc

I received $2031 from warranty company out of a bill of around $9000

Better than nothing

I was more annoyed with the dealer I had purchased car from who promised everything but did nothing

Car does few ks only 2000 since rebuild but has just had service including transmission at gympie and everything is good and it tows the extended horse float brilliantly
