Rear Brakes

Gday All,


Will be doing the rear pads this weekend, and looks a very straight forward job. Am just wondering if others that have been doing the rear pads have gone that extra step and inspected and cleaned out the park brake drum brakes.


My old ford has drums all round so its a system I am familiar with but so far have had no reason to think there are any issues with the park brake.
I am leaning towards checking it as I will be doing half the job anyway.


Does anyone know if the rear drums are a regular set or a special L/R make.

Do the extra step Ean. Same as any drum setup and worth the little extra effort. I'm assuming you're not doing a shoe change. Especially worth it as you will be adjusting the shoes once completed and this will avoid any of the reported issues with the EPB actuator. There's some you tubes on the procedure but if you've done drums before then it's a walk in the park. I think the screw holding the drum/disk on is a tx50 so get one of those first. Force tools (from Tradetools etc) make a small impact screwdriver set that has a TX50 tip in it.

I have a full set of TX bits, so assume its the same as the one holding on the front discs, and replaced them and recently had them off when doing the front wheel bearings.
Have the workshop disc and the adjustment process seems pretty straight forward, but wondered if it was neccisary when not doing a shoe change.


All will be known in the next few days.

Hi Ean, I went the whole way even buying the hand brake shoes before I had taken the rear disc's off. After removing the rear disc's I found the shoes to be in near new condition. I changed them anyway this was after 200,000klms . From memory they were very expensive to buy.

I remove rear discs and clean the park brake assemblies at every second service on the Disco 3s and Range Rover Sports I maintain.

If your doing pads, make sure you do the sensor too.
It just saves you having to replace it later or if it breaks, they become very fragile after being heated all the time.

Good idea Sniegy. Mine wasn't done and a couple of weeks after a pad change the warning light came on. It was easy enough to fix but is another task to do that could have been done in one go when the brakes were done.
