Hi all,

Looking for some advice on antenna base mounts please.

I'm setting up a UHF antenna mount on the rear of my roof rails like Rich and Ed in this thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/149036-show-us-antennas-your-d4-d3.html

expecting to run a stubby antenna around town and swap over to a longer one when needed but wondering what people's opinions about the connector base:

Not sure whether to go for a 5/16" stud like this:

or a SO-239 like Scott in this thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/communications-car-audio-electronics/219799-cover-protect-aerial-mounting-thread.html

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/06/177.jpg

Seems to be plenty of antenna choices with either base ? Is the 5/16" more robust? Any other considerations? Thanks for your help.

David

Personally I would go with SO-239 base...

i prefer the 5/8. ive got both types on the vehicle and found that if you use a cheaper pl259 antenna, there is the chance they can split at the screw on base of the actual antenna.. well, i had this happen. the chinese antenna tend to use the least amount of metal they can perhaps to keep costs down. where as ive never in 40 odd years had a 5/8 fail . broken a few antenna on trees etc but never the base of the antenna, cheap or not.

just my two cents worth.

Thanks Tombie. Why?

Better choice of antenna and a better connecting system...
