View Full Version : RRC Rollcage Anyone?
Mercguy

Has anyone had a rollcage fabricated for their RRC?
I'm just curious about time & $$$. I am also wondering how much space was sacrificed in the rear for the tubes / floor plates etc.
If anyone has pics of a cage setup, be it 2 or 4 door could they please share?
TIA.

I know Land Rover Special Vehicles made a bunch with internal roll cages (and other mods) for a certain special bunch.

Somehow absence of a rollbar doesn't seem to be a fatal issue in the 2door RRC, surprising given:
Roof stiffness appears to be entirely due to windscreen (drive one with no windscreen)
Number of rollovers in early days - typically blokes not used to a more direct steering (often RRC was wifes car) and overcooking on a downhill corner Sunday night coming down Mt whatever with a load on the roof after the ski weekend.

I think a combo of the safety devices Rollcage + the dash part of the Bolt Equipment cage would make the ultimate cage for the Softdash RRC

Who has looked into the legalities in AU off RRC cage installations, im guessing its all about distance from head? Do they have to be padded?

Every state has a code of practice (Engineering approval / certification / modification plate) which specifies the requirements for rollcage installations.
There are specifications on anchor point locations, harness points if the hoops are to be used as part of the restraining system, distance requirements, side-intrusion bar restrictions, and several other requirements, not limited to the metallurgy of the tube and the welding etc.
ALL areas where the cage is directly exposed to any part of the body when it is seated and secured with a safety harness MUST be padded. so that's the front hoop, a pillar, b pillar, centre hoop, cross braces etc. If rear passengers are also occupants, then the same policies apply to those seat locations also.
You will need to check with the specific requirements in your state as each state has a different opinion on exactly what their own definitions are - however, if it's left to an engineer for approval, I would urge you to seek the advice of someone who specifically builds rollcages for homologated racing vehicles - i.e. someone who builds to FIA class specifications.
Why? for one, they can weld specialist tube like 4130 etc. They have access to the special tubes required for rollcages (the tubes are very specific and are not widely available) and they will be able to certify the cage, as well as make it permanent or removable. Bear in mind the roof of the RRC is removeable, so installing is not as evil as you may think....
in the end it's up to you, but since it is a safety item being installed, it makes sense to have it installed by a professional who is actually certified to build them.

Bought one off here from a 2 door that was being parted out. Previous owner worked at Arb so was a pretty neat job by the r&d team there. Modifying to fit the extra length.
Planning to build some extras off this one for two mates with LSEs and a couple for others.

That 2 door isn't being parted out, just a few bits like the diffs going to my POS.
Stock springs, diffs, guards and Rostyles going on then it will be sold.

Naaaaah, Lockee has it. Really well thought out thing.
I didn't want it because the configuration in the cargo bay didn't suit the stuff I cart around or the lpg tank in my POS.

The only thing I can think that was wrong with it is that it needs to be notched or mounted 10 to 15 mm back where it mounts to the floor at the B pillar because you can't get the front seats out of the car backwards.
Just needs to clear the seat base by not much.
Not a lot in it. Lockee is a smart bloke.
cheers, DL

If you handy with a mig and tig pretty easy to make a cage , the worst is where to put in your cross-over or reinforcement bars so it just does not go sideways and bent being useless..I know you must have ease of access ( egress ) for vic-toads but I am making one going across behind the front seats then twin middles to the rear wheel arches on rather than large soul plates (base plates) then add another cross over as to cage in from the tools and camp gear coming forward and killing you, that with a good auto fire system keeps the family safe..
im awaiting back surgery hence why my LS7 killer is not finished but in a couple of years im hoping to be a proud man in finally finishing my project..
Good luck anyway..

Basic cage we are getting done is as picture J-3, except the hoops are at b and c pillars, with b pillar hoop bent back just behind drivers head. Bar work across c pillar hoop is yet to be decided

Agree move to the driveline for sale section.
Ashcroft ATB should do the trick, apart from that, the manual locking LT230 is pretty reliable for most applications.
