View Full Version : Timing Belt Failure

I have had the timing belt tensioner fail a few months after changing the timing belts. (cue: wailing and gnashing of teeth). It is amazing how after something breaks one finds the the internet saying " Oh yes. Known problem, make sure you change the oil pump casing when changing the timing belt". Anyway "water under the bridge" and all that.
What happened;
I was pootling along at 80km/h unloaded on a flat section so motor was not working hard. Motor still cranks.
Now the questions;
1. What other damage could I have done
2. Should I pulls the heads off and examine valves and pistons etc?
3. Any other useful suggestions

Will have probably killed the engine. Pistons into valves, etc. Cheapest repair would probably be a Ford Territory engine.

I see on the net that the rover place in SA can supply a new long motor 2.7 td6 for $11k . Maybe usefull info if your motor is stuffed .

Same happened to my friend in a Ford Territory a couple of months back.
Not sure how but no valve or piston damage, actually nothing wrong apart the belt itself (lucky git that he is). Anyway dont assume the engine is toast yet you can be lucky it seems.

Chris

Going to have a crack at replacing the broken bits (tensioner, casing, belt) and see what happens.

Remove the rocker cover as well and check the rocker shaft is not broken. If it is it is not a bad thing as as they are designed to get go to save other components. If it is ok by all means go ahead and change the belt, but turn engine over by hand a few times before cranking. If it was me I would also disconnect the fuel and crank her over and do a compression test just to be sure all is well before starting her up.
Good luck
Chris

Thanks for that. We will have a look at those because there is other damage in the top end some where. The work shop times to do some of this work is crazy?

In terms of new motors LR $19k Ford 24k. Sad face. Gotta laugh though. Has anyone had any good will out out of Landrover re this sort of failure?

Have a read of this Disco3 thread and skip to page 26 if you are a bit short on time to read the whole thing.

DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Support the oil pump casing investigation (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic107148-375.html)

It seems that some people have got some partial relief from LR towards repairs depending on the exact circumstances. Don't know about Australia.

Cheers,
Scott

Too good thanks guys. I have started with Landrover (we'll see where that goes) and Triumph Spares is looking good. I will provide up-dates as I go along.

Update.
Well the up-shot was that the timing belt failure had caused catastrophic engine damage. So I sourced an MY10 motor with 45k kms from Triumph Rover Spares. Gotta say both my mechanic and I got excellent service, advice and support from these guys. Vehicle is 99% back together. Just needs covers etc back on. I am giving it a run this weekend. Great so far. I just have to decide which kidney I will be selling now. ;-)

TRS are real good to deal with. Glad to hear you sorted it out.

All going well so far. Although I have to check that the engine isn't one that was subject to the HPFP recall.
