DIY Tdi auto conversion

I'm considering converting my R380 to a Disco auto (ZF 4HP22 I think?), if it turns out my R380 requires rebuilding.

I'm interested in any info on what is required including time/parts/tools/skills, things to watch out for etc, etc.

I must be getting old and/or lazy, but I do like the idea of a point and shoot Defender :)

Good idea Ranga. The ZF auto box is also more plentiful than another R380. From what I've read in the past the easiest way is to swap in a new motor and tranny combined.

You drop the r380 and transfer out together after removing transmission tunnel and seat box centre cover[do it for ease], remove clutch/flywheel and adaptor plate, fit auto adaptor plate and flex plate then auto with torque convertor seated and transfer case attached, you will need some high pressure transmission cooler hose[pirtek] and a cooler, also a kick down cable bracket to attach to your injector pump. you can attach the t bar to the space between the seats until you work out your personal cubby/t bar set up

you may have to modify the zf spud shaft to suit the defender lt230, mine would not go all the way in due to different spline lengths.

May as well pull the motor and fix any leaks while your at it.
I've got a new engine crane that needs a work out.
Keep us updated if you go ahead with it, I should be available to lend a hand.

I'd love to do this too but the $ makes it uneconomical for me I'm afraid. :(
