Just thought I would report how my new Puma manages my 16 foot hard top (not a pop top) caravan. AMAZING!!!
I never thought other caravans  would annoy me for going too slow, I actually forgot for a while I had the van on!! She was fully loaded with a full tank of water too, I am starting to wonder if the 150hp suplement page in my handbook is actually true the way it pulls. Accelerating up hill in top gear is not something I thought was possible towing with a Defender!!

I found similar when towing my 1200ish kg enclosed trailer. After using a TDi Defender and a TD5 D2, this is another world. I'm sure if you came from a RRS or the like you may think differently, but I am very happy, I love being able to do hill starts in high range too.
What does your van weigh?

Must admit I recently towed a 16 ft tinnie which all up weighed approx 1 tonne with a combined weight of 650kg in the back and on top of my 2013 110 wagon from Perth to Steep Point. It breezed through the road conditions at 100kmh up to 120kmh (6th gear accelerator response was amazing)  and  didn't miss a beat in 3rd low dragging the tinnie with a wider wheel base through approximately 300 metres of powdery soft sand up hill on the enterance track into Steep Point.
Needless to say I was extremely happy with my 110 for the trip. :D

1450kg, then there is the water and all my gear. I cant imagine being more happy regardless what I had driven before. The Puma not only pulls like a train but the 110 handles amazing even with all that weight behind it.

When towing our Tvan fully loaded (about 1300kg) I hardly notice that it's there. The 2.2l TDCI and 6-speed box are a great match and the fuel penalty when towing is only about 1l per 100km. I'm happy with that.

Similar experience with our camper trailer, even up steep hills. The gearing and torque seem well matched.

Hi Chris ,  thanks for this imfo. When Land Rover said they were going down to a 2.2 lt My thoughts were , there must be mad , Triumph make a motor bike with a 2.2lt engine , how is that going to tow anything other than a little 6x4 .trailer . So this is nice and reassuring !!.. Jim  :)

Well I currently have a 6m boat which I tow too easily at the moment with my disco.  (I can show you how quickly you can loose a boat off the trailer going around a roundabout too fast.... ;(  ).  I just bought a Deefer and will use it instead to tow the boat, so will let you know in a few weeks when I pick it up.

I've found much the same towing out approx. 1.5 tonne van, the Deafener pulls it easy and makes getting past slower vehicles in passing lanes very easy. 
Same up hills whereas in our 3ltr Prado we only got more noise when kicking down a gear, the Deafener will pull very well.
Better gear ratios and good torque show LR have obviously done their homework.

I really would not worry, my van is less, but the water we luge plus all the gear for shooting and campling and I honestly forgot the van was on you really wont have a problem. It really dives like the van is not attached.

Im really interested in this thread.
Ive just purchased a 16ft New Age Manta Ray Deluxe off road van. About 2300kgs.
Im looking at buying a Landrover as a solo touring tow vehicle. Head says Discovery, 2013 onwards, heart says 110, 2013 onwards. 
Is anyone towing 2600kg worth of van in their 2.2 Defender? Im aware of the UK based ECU reflash, Intercooler and non DPF exhaust mods which I would do to the truck ASAP.
Thanks for any advice fellers.

At the weekend I towed a twin axle trailer full of rowing boats. All up weight would have been in the region of about 2500kg (12 rowing boats plus oars, riggers etc.). Weight wasn't a problem, the Defender (110 2.2 puma) got up to 90kph easily enough, wind resistance from here though was another matter...!!!
With all the boats, the trailer is nearly 4.5m high and I was towing into a pretty strong head wind, so although I could get up to 100kph and drop into 6th, it was easier to stay in 5th at about 2500rpm, somewhere between 90-95kph.
I averaged over 20litre/100k's though......:o

Your rear suspension has hardly dropped at all. Yes, I realize the trailer is twin axle, so better balanced.
Is the rear suspension standard or have you fitted airbags?
Back to the question and I think it can safely be said both the Defender and the Disco would easily tow a two-tonne van, no worries. They are both superb towing vehicles. The Defender's six-speed manual gearing makes up for its relatively small engine size. Once you're rolling, there is always a gear for every situation, just keep the revs in the 2-3000 range and its fine.
Our camper trailer only weighs about 11-1200 kg. fully loaded, so half what is being asked, but towing it is not a problem.

That's a very big van. The 90 is way down at the back and the front wheels have lifted a lot, which would affect the steering and stability.
I assume that a longer wheelbase in the 110 would make it more stable for towing than a shorter wheelbase in the 90. Do you agree?

Thanks for the informed advice fellas. I just found out I have to have a total knee replacement on BOTH my knees next week (17 Feb) so the Landy purchase will have to wait a month or two (unless I get a mate to pick up the new vehicle for me).
27 years in the military will do that to you, and Im only 52!
I'll spend the time laid up researching available vehicles. I can buy a new Discovery from Cairns LR for around $82K for the S.
A 2013-14 110 can be had for $50 ish so that leaves a bit for modifications.

I was actually wondering the same thing. Im pretty knocked about, so that is the main reason that the Discovery is still in my purchase desisions ( of course, its a brilliant vehicle, just a lot of money to scratch in the bush).

It's towed a few cars now and performed well. 
Average fuel 15/100 while doing it.

All the suspension is 3 years old and stock, previous owner towed with it also. 
I have the inside gosiip on this one as the the wife pays the rego..
