I am fitting a bigger intercooler and hybrid turbo to my 130 td5 and feel the need to upgrade the intake aswell .i have found a airbox from a volvo 850 that has a engine power output of 248hp and is 350mmx200mm giving a increase diameter of %30 and uses the same thickness as the original panel filter .it will fit in the same place as the original box but go futher along the empty space behind the head . Has anyone else used a different setup to the original.ps i did search but couldnt find anything

You shouldn't need an uprated airbox. Pete Bell has done some amazing things with the TD5; he found the newer plastic jobbie, Land Rover raised air intake "chokes" the breathability. Results can be seen on Defender2.net (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic19428.html)

I know if it's an earlier 10P TD5; some have changed out the lid to a later airbox lid, as it has a different sensor. If you don't and get a remap made for a later TD5 (on an earlier TD5), some faults will show.

You can never have to much clean air . The problem for me is that i live in cairns and during the wet season when the humidity is though the roof my 130 struggles big time and blows black smoke as most diesels do up here ,i think this is because the air filter is getting soaked from the humidity in the air and making it harder to breath .by making the filter bigger it will help to offset the humidity effects on the papper filter

Makes sense.

I know some have retro-fitted a 300tdi style (large cylindrical) airbox. It should just fit in place of the TD5 style.

If you do end up with a bigger box, I'd recommend putting a larger pipe from the airbox to the wing. I think the stock is pretty inadequate.
