View Full Version : P38's just do it!

I'm really enjoying the "stock P38" life at the moment, so I thought I'd put up a bit of a day journal.
My new addition (for those who don't know, it's a 2002 HSE) has not failed to impress on many, many occasions since its purchase. It's stock suspension-wise with a set of 255/60/18 all terrain tyres. The tracks that I drive would be considered 'hard' without being wild. And today it just wowed again.
There were a number of locked and lifted Toyotas, and a locked and lifted Suzuki Jimny. Not only did the P38 clamber and scurry up, over and around the tracks today with grace and elegance, no no - it did it without recovery. One Toyota required winching up a particular section, the Jimny had 3 attempts to get up, the P38 just drove it. No lockers, no suspension work, even had road pressures in the tyres! I got a jaw-dropping "wow" as one of the Toyota drivers commented on the impressive wheel travel of the P38 and asked what I'd done to it. When I said "this Rangie is completely stock mate" he said some words that I cannot repeat here.
Just another story I thought I'd share with you all!
Oh, and I think I'm converted by these General Grabber AT2's as well...
Cheers

I had the same with my B-I-L and his brother at Deua NP. I was in the previous RRC (with 4.6) and it just loped up slopes that my BIL in his GQ Patrol struggled with and his brother in a Jack took three attempts to climb.
The thing is that they loathe and rubbish Land Rovers all the time.
My sister's comment when she drove my Range for the first time was that it was so much better to drive than the Patrol and see out of.

Yeah Gary, can't sleep! Come off night shift but haven't fully returned to day shift mode... It's a rare thing for me to be out of sync like this.
I agree Ron! It is quite a giggle when they question me about taking "that pretty thing" on the tracks, then it out performs them!
Don't they just drive so nice! I remember riding with a mate in his GQ, it's like bricks, with a lot of engine noise.
Cheers

I agree they drive really well !
When I did the Driver Training with the CC4WD club there were a couple of remarks about how effortlessly the Rangie negotiated the course.
On the last descen there were some bloody big hole and I went down first pretty easily. As I watched the others descend and teeter and rock from one hole to the next I remarked to the instructor next to me that I felt like I didn't lift a wheel, he looked a me with a wry smile and said "you didn't" :D
Those Grabber AT's look good, my previous beast had Maxxis Bravo AT's on it and I liked them a lot as well

Not sure how many of you have seen this and although it focuses on the later model rangie I am sure we will all recognise the silver "stock" rangie which is in front of it for a while :D

I love showing up my mates in mine, I'm the only one with an LR product amongst Pootrol/Toyota owners.
My first offroad trip I still had the 18" wheels with road tyres on. It was keeping up/outdoing mates with lifted hilux's etc :D

You've all got it right. The Rangie does it so easily and comfortably, but it does cause me a dilemma. Will it get me to the Cape and back or should I buy a smaller diesel Jappa?

I drove my '99 HSE to the cape on stock suspension (albeit with a snorkel), and a locker. I used the locker once (going downhill) and the mud tyres were unnecessary.
I'd do it tomorrow in either of my P38's. In fact, I'm taking my new one (completely standard apart from camping gear) up there in 3wks time.
You'll make it no worries. Just make sure it's serviced beforehand and you'll be right. Adequate (but not unnecessary) preparation is all it takes.
