Anyone recommend a brand?
I'm hoping the gaskets just lift off,,
but for anything that sticks---
aparently whizzer pads leave marks in the alloy,,

Pedro, Spray works to some degree, but i found you still need to scrape, use a plastic blade.
I once used a large smooth flat sharpening stone gently and cleaned my block with no bothers.

Alloy ?
these brushes are amazing for cleaning aluminium ..... it will take ages for something as big as a V8 engine block though ......
Small Brushes to clean, detail and refinish cast aluminium alloy motor surfaces, restore aluminum alloy motorcycle engine and auto motor alloy castings. To restore motorcycle aluminum alloy, and safely remove corrosion. Four sizes with Stainless Stee (http://www.machinerycleanery.com/)
I highly recommend them (if only I could find mine :( ... it's been a year it's been hiding in the shed somewhere ...).

IIRC the grey whizzer pads are meant for alloy and in my experience if you are gentle enough they do an excellent job. In regards to gasket remover I've used Loctite "chisel gasket remover" before but be bloody careful with it, it's friggen savage, it'll burn badly if you get it on your skin and if your as clumsy as me a trip to the emergency department when you get overspray in your right eye :o bloody good for baked on gaskets though!
