I've contacted 2 LR dealers in Sydney now to buy soem oil for the disco but neither could help me out.

The owners manual states you should use a 5W-40 diesel oil, for which LR recommend Mobil Delvac 1, a premium diesel oil, but as I say they can't supply me with it. 8O

Does anyone know where I can buy this oil or similar in Sydney, preferably the Parramatta area.
Thanks,
John

Try Penrite HPR Diesel 5 ... it's a semi-synthetic SAE 5W-40 diesel engine oil. I know Graeme Cooper in Sydney uses Penrite for the TD5 engines.

According to the Penrite website ... HPR Diesel 5 is designed for the latest generation light duty diesel engines including common rail and hydraulically actuated injector equipped units. Specific examples include BMW TD6, Land Rover TD5, RR TD6.

Henry.

My dealer uses Mobil 1 0-40, though has said the Mobil 1 5-50 bought in the shops is fine to use. So I do.

Hi Slunnie,
Is Mobil 1 suitable for diesel? I thought it was for petrol motors. If it is for diesel use is it cearly marked?

Mobil 1 0W-40 and 5W-50 are API CF rated (diesel), as is Castrol's Formula R 0W-40 and 10W-60, Magnatec, and stacks of other brands and blends.

Mobil Delvac 1 is the latest API CI-4+, (US EGR emmissioned heavy duty engines) as well as all the previous API ratings, all the relevant ACEA specs (Euro heavy diesel), Global DHD, JASO, and more manufacturer engine specs than you can shake a stick at, as well as the latest API car specs for mixed fleet use.

Get Delvac 1 from a Mobil distributor/depot. I get it from the depot at Tamworth for $186/20 litres, which makes it cheaper than any car type synthetic oil/litre from any retail outlet like K-Mart. It is also a real synthetic, being a PAO(group IV)/ester(group V) base, unlike some of Castrol and Shell's offerings which are Group III (hydrocracked hydrocarbon, derived from conventional oil). Shell calls theirs XHVI, which is still a pretty trick fluid.

or you can do what i did....ring penrite and ask them who they supply to in your area which ever grade of oil you need....they were very helpful when i called them and they found out and rang me back within less than 5 mins.....

autopro at riverwood carry penrite hpr diesel5 so does greame cooper as stated by henry....greame sells it for about 15 dollars cheaper...

Just checked the RAVE disc, and the recommended engine oil viscosities are 5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50, ACEA A1,B1. (pretty easily met)

As an example, Castrol Formula R 0W-40 is B3 (Stay-in-grade for high performance indirect injection diesel
engines).
B4 (Stay-in-grade for modern high performance direct injection
diesel engines).
So it technically exceeds Land Rovers minimum requirements easily.

While an excellent diesel oil, Delo 400 is a 15W-40, so if you want to follow the recommendations, it sort of rules it out.
I think they specify a minumum of 5w-XX due to the common rail injectors using oil pressure to function.
Most common rail diesels can't cope with anything heavier than a 5W-XX, eg. Jackeroos have had big problems if the wrong viscosity was used.

Personally, I'd rather use Delvac 1 as I know it can cope better than the car oils with the introduced soot from the EGR system, but the manufacturer does know from testing what will work.

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice, a particular note goes to Rick. I didn't realise there was so much to be learnt about engine oils.

I'll contact Mobil tomorrow to see if I can get the 20 lt drum you reference.

Thanks,
John
