Could possibly be a Canbus wire short to earth or loose earth somewhere.
See the below thread of a similar problem I endured.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/202141-no-brake-lts-hazards-etc-auto-h-lts-long-hard-reset.html
and another thread where Scott LRD414 had a similar issue but in a different location to mine.

Good luck!

Hold smart key in recess under steering column and press start.
Reset procedure is in the handbook.
Happens if key is out of the car when you switch off. (Out of range).

Thanks Mangus
Read those threads and after talking to Tim at traxide about the new DBS I had just installed I opened the bonnet. DBS80 light on--good. Took the battery cover off and fiddled with the little loom in front of the battery and went tried and it started everything as normal. Now just got to find the exact short/loose. connection. Thanks for a great forum.

Mine played up when the vehicle was a yr or two old, intermittently.
Very frustrating.
particularly as LR knew there was an issue, and the first time it did it we were over 1000k's from the nearest dealer.
Anyway they changed something in the dash and did a software upgrade, all good.
Opening and shutting the front doors affected mine as well, that is if you opened and shut the passenger door when the not found message was up,it would vanish and not appear for a day or two.

Thanks for the help all. Followed up Scott's PM and have tidied up and cable tied the couple of cables around the DBS and that seems to have sorted the problem. Trust it is a long team fix.

There is a technical bulletin on Topix - 'LTB00540v4 - Engine Will Not Crank/'Smart Key Not Found' Message Displayed' for Discovery 4, Model Year 2010 Onwards, VIN: AA513326 Onwards, where the Keyless Vehicle Module is either replaced or software upgraded, but the symptoms are mainly related to the message centre display 'Smart Key Not Found, Engine fails to crank and vehicle may not lock/unlock'.
It might pay to have a dealer check for this issue - 'Lock up of keyless vehicle module (KVM) - LTB00540v4', but with the other signs of no indicators showing on the dash and no A/C - heater, I would be guessing a short or bad earth connection.
If when you moved the loom in and around the battery case it all came good, you may possibly be in the right location.

I went to start my RR Sport this morning. All electrice were dead. I pressed the brake and hit the start button. "Smart key not found" "contact your dealer". I did and they couldn't help apart from offering a loan car.
I ungooked the positive cable from the battery; all of it. Left it off for 1/2 a min, tightened it back up again. Miracle!!! It all fired up. Just remove your pos + battery terminal, leave it off for half a min and put it back on again. Easy peasy.
