viscous fan

I think my viscous fan is kaput.
It seems to stay on all the time now.:mad:
Has anyone taken there's off and not replaced it?

Mine is too...better than being stuck off i suppose!

A common failure and there are plenty of online vids to help you out. When i can be bothered, ill change mine for an electric.

The only issues it will cause are.
the heater takes longer to warm me up in the morning
Its noisy and makes pedestrians run if they cross in front of me
less fuel efficient
and if doing a long decline when off road using the engine braking, it will cool the engine back down to 56 degrees ... again a keeping me warm issue in the snow ;)

Also its common to take it off and leave it off in the uk...but i would be hesitant to do it here.

Hi Chaybra,
I know that a lot of L322 owners in the UK take there's off.
Think I've read some where that a few of the aussie owners have as well with no ill effects,especially during our summer heat.
Just need to confirm before I do.

Yep, mine did the same. I had it off doing some other work, I had a look at it and found the pin that runs from beneath the bi metal strip into the centre of the fan hub was seized up. I pulled the bi metal strip off, wiggles the pin out and cleaned everything up. Reassembled with a bit of copper grease and it was fine for over 12 months. It has just started playing up again.

Also, try Revving the **** out of the engine - that unstick a them sometimes too.

I'm not game enough to remove it entirely and will bite the bullet soon and buy a new one! but at 160 quid (half that for the V8 one for some reason) it's not on top of my list...

Yeah, i think its about 4K worth of spinning metal to get it off, a rare number in my car! haha tho when it does you notice that everything is so quiet
Ill be going to a electric fan soon...once one comes up for a decent price that is.

Does the front fan work?
after having thermostat issues, I can confirm the cooling capacity of the TD6 is huge, even in summer the engine wouldn't get up to temp when the stat was stuck open.

IMO, if that big elec fan on the front is OK, then you won't notice the viscus unit missing. The engine ECU instructs the fan ECU to operate when engine cooling is required (as well as the AC instructing based on refigerant pressure), and at over 20inch, it pushes a lot more air than any aftermarket unit available.
