Fuel issue. Injector loom or fuel pump?

Could be battery

AFAIR there is a known problem with the BMW diesel that the ecu reads the engine temp incorrectly and assumes it is hot.
That's all I recall so I assume it may be the engine temp sensor or may need an update.

Hey Philip does that mean the computer thinks the cars warm and doesn't fire up the glow plugs? Or do they fire up every time even if it's warm or cold. Sorry I know more about petrol engines than diesel. If so then that makes a lot of sense why it wouldn't start.

Does it happen when the fuel gauge is reading below 1/4 tank? If so, could be the in tank pump. The way these operate can mean you end up with no fuel in one side of the tank when it gets low when the pump starts to get old.
We have the same issue and it's easy to get it going again. Turn the ignition on and leave it until the fuel pump cuts out - do this 3 or 4 times and you will then usually have enough fuel over the pickup for it to start.
Replacing the pump is simple - I've just never got around to it, so I keep the tank full. :D

This engine doesn't need the glow plugs to run to get it to fire unless it gets VERY cold - generally colder than what we see in Australia. I can easily start mine without waiting for the glow plug light to go out even in a heavy frost (unless the fuel Freezes first - which has happened before...)

In tank pump replaced 18 months or so ago.Has only done it when it is in town, never at home.Has only done it a couple of times many weeks apart, but will try your trick next time it plays up.

Mine had the exact same problem, if it isnt firing, hop down the bottom left (just infront of the left rear wheel) and listed for the secondary, inline fuel pump. I had some issues with mine about a year ago, initially causing intermittent failures on starting. No fault codes, no performance changes.
I went thru 2 pumps and changed the filter (I think this was partially blocked and put extra pressure on the fuel pumps causing them to fail) but by the time I did that, I already was on my way with upgrading the pump to a common/reliable bosche pump for half the price. No problems since.
but back to it, take the cover off and give it a tap with a spanner or something, if its sticky should let it kick start if the key is on

This is what i ended up with after replacing the factory unit twice,
Its your bog standard Holden Commodore VL pump (Bosch 070) about $150 new with a lifetime warranty thru bursons.
I also added the small inline screen filter, I dont think this is entirely necessary and in the end made it difficult to fit. but its in now so im not going to take it out. I think you will need to use an adapter to make the smaller inlet hose fit onto the larger bosch inlet. The wires I just cut the pug off and put the eyelet crimps that came with it.
I havent had a drama since.
Good luck and I hope you can get it sorted.
Also, change the fuel filter in the engine bay, I sill think this had something to do with the premature failure of the pumps
