Notwithstanding SClarke Esq's verbal peregrinations style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
The short answer is NO it can't be done , unless you don't mind stuffing a perfectly good bonnet in the process.
They were not designed for it and aren't up to the job. I've seen one or two around the traps where they've tried it and they end up in a heluva mess.

Mad Max is the Answer.
Mad Max 1 was Filmed in Little River.
The Hotel is still there, but the new one is next it. Old one is Now a House.
When the Goose gives the Guy in the Trike the "Get out of Jail free card" you can see the Ruins of the 1st Hotel of Little River. Those Ruins are still there and on the Geelong Side of the "Little River"
On Old Melbourne Road there is a Crest on the Hill. This is the Crest that the "Night Rider" crashed the interceptor HQ Coupe he stole.
And that crest at 180kmh is very exciting......
Anyone up for a Mad Max Tour to see where it was all filmed??
Mmmm i could run a tour company.....
Time for the medication.....

I have a bonnet mount on my Defender and as a matter of fact I put the 2nd spare on last night in preparation for my month up north commencing this coming weekend.
You can obviously use a bonnet mount but I (or more precisely previous owner) had the full upgrade done on it. Put in extra supports and various mods etc.
My experience with it which is now extensive is that I am in favour because it has allowed me to travel with two spares without need for roof rack. It also looks like a Land Rover should. I looked at it this morning and it definitely has its "game face on" or perhaps a more appropriate term would be "battle dress". Having said that, it comes off as soon as I get back to town and go back to one spare.
Downsides: I believe it effects fuel economy (compared to roof rack maybe not so bad) and vision. Also changes the feel of the handling quite a bit. Not worse exactly but definitely different. I'd say it increases wear on front shocks and springs but be how much I don't know.
I don't like swing away rear doors and carry Spare No 1 in the cargo area. I think sooner or later I am going to have to work through this issue though. It's a pia there and not safe either.

A Mad Max tour now that would be cool. Actually got to sit in one of the XB interceptors used in the original movie some years back, was doing the rounds of the local shows and expos. There was even a guy over here who built a coupe up to imitate the original Mad Max Coupe. Iam actually watching Mad Max 1 tonight (boring night shift) in an hours time or so for about the 150th time. Nearly went to live around Little River about 4 years ago but the job would not pay enough. Now if we could do the tour and get some of the toys to play with. I think they should include some rovers in the upcoming Mad Max 4.

Wait till you do some "Harvey Style" offroading with it on the bonnet, they cause an awful blind spot where you are trying to pick your line through the rough.

My 95 has a spare on the bonnet, I have not looked closely at the setup, the previous owner has travelled all over the country side and ut seems to be OK. I currently have the second spare on the roof rack, would love a swing away carrier for our simpson trip in Sept. I will have a close look tonight.

I enquired when I bought my car, & was told the bonnet mount was no longer an option with TD5s. All the bonnet reinforcing struts have been removed to shoehorn the TD5 in.

I didn't know that the TD5 engine led to the loss of the bonnet mount capability. I wonder what the Ford Transit engine change will mean. Usually when these things go, they go forever.

Can be done easy (as long as you don't have a massive trye and you are not a short A*se
But you need a differant bonnett as they are stronger to take the spare wheel. The you have a metal disc in the middle which clamps the tyres donwn on to the bonnett.
Can make a standard stronger by welding braces under the skin of the old bonnett, and thenbolting the disc on the top (which you can get from the dealer)
After all that is all the are

sorry Zook, but the bonnet on my 130 is exactly the same as a 110, a weak piece of $%#@.
The spare factory mounts in the left rear corner of a HICAP, (where mine is) or under/on the tray of a tray back.
If you want to mount a spare on the bonnet, you have to buy the corresponding re-inforcement kit, along with the wheel holder assembly thingy, which I've been cautioned against obtaining by friends in the NT as they destroy the bonnet and hinges pretty quickly on corrugated roads.
JamesH
23rd June 2005, 11:42 AM
Looking at the hooks which pass as hinges on my bonnet I see that one side sits higher than the other so it would indicate even with the support that some sort of damage has occured. It may be from somebody standing on it by the shirtload of corrugated roads it has travelled over with a spare on the bonnet.
Having said that the damage does not seem significant and let's face it panel fit in general is not exactly top drawer anyway. It was bought to prevent the spare destroying the back door. I think they are a better option than the standard rear door mount. The rear door lock **** itself anyway.
Anyway, looks sexy.

Good point Vlad but that would mean I'd have to choose a white one and when/if I ever upgrade the 300Tdi I was hoping to get a non white one. Always fancied dark green with a white roof. Green Defender with white roof and bonnet would look - interesting - but the white Defender with a green bonnet....
It would be interesting if I was doing a trade in. I'd make my excuses and slip outside for a moment, come in sign the papers and hurriedly drive off. Alf Barbagello would look out his office window and see an old 300Tdi with a green bonnet on the forecourt.

I have seen recent Td5's Defenders with white roofs though.

I didnt think the series bonnets had much plating / gusseting underneath so they may not be all that strong either.
Find a stage 1 bonnet, mine has heaps of plateing underneath, although they may fall afew inches short aswell.

Not sure if its true, but I remember reading in a thread a while ago on LRE, I cant find the thread, but I think it mentioned that the bonnet to engine clearance was less on the TD5 compared to the TDI, hence being the reason for them scrapping the extra under bonnet bracing and spare tyre mount.
Might pay to look into it.

Mine's the same but with slight damage to th right rear (ie nearest the cab) due to obvious stress of a heavy tyre bouncing around on it for years. So even when they work, they are still not ideal. Much like the rear door hinge problem on the wagons....

i don't know if this would be an issue, that is unless you are travelling in reverse very fast.
and i think you can get a conversion kit for the earlier defenders/110's, but don't forget one of the most important parts of the kit does not go on the bonnet, it is the bonnet catch spring, for a spare wheel bonnet, it is a heavier spring to handle the extra 40 odd kilos of spare.

Factory bonnet wheel kit fitted to my 300Tdi 110 wagon worked fine for about 100,000 kms and then started cracking reinforcing struts and collapsing bonnet - so no more wheel on front! Like rear door, is not strong enough mount for prolonged dirt road use. Pity as is a great place for second spare and I have heard of people being protected by bonnet spare when cab crushed on rollover.

I believe you can. The rims can handle them also. (Coopers tyre table confirms this).
The real point is this, (S1 & II owners can probably confirm), the early cars ran lightweight skinny wheels by comparison, and had a spare mounted on the bonnet designed and built for the job.
Throwing a 7" alloy wheel shod with a modern "fat" tyre on a bonnet not designed to handle it, can and probably will, cause panel damage, legal and safety issues.
Maybe a Series owner will weigh a wheel for us for comparison?
Cheers,
Trev.

I've got some said original 5.5" Defender steel rims (if anyone wants 'em) but nothing to weigh them with. It was no trouble with one of these on the bennoet but as Trev says, a wider & heavier wheel would do damage and rewstrict vision.
Not to mention that a wide wheel on the bonnet would look crook aesthetically.

OK... I can't be arsed to read all the replies so appologies if I'm going over old ground here:
The later 'Fender bonnets are not designed to have the wheels mounted on them, they don't have the extra braces and are not strong enough. Your best bet would be to get an older style bonnet & swap it over.
That said, another option would be to use one of those chequer plate inserts to strengthen the area and then mount the carrier through that.
