View Full Version : Rethinking my camping set up.

As some will know, my P38A is usually set up for camping with an awning, drawers, and a fridge.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=96758&stc=1&d=1437468506

One problem is that the car is useless for carrying anything when the drawers are in situ. Also, I hate setting up a tent for a one night stop.

Today, I was looking at the stripped out interior and wondered if I could sleep lengthways in the back. I could, there is just over 1800mm of length.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=96759&stc=1&d=1437468704

I could make a floor that sits into the rear wheel well and shaped to fit around the seat base. A water tank or a drawer could fit under it.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=96760&stc=1&d=1437468737

A bed on a false floor could be arranged lengthwise on one side, with the other side having storage. The space under the floor could have two slide out
sections, one being a drawer and the other the camp kitchen as used on camper trailers. The fridge would be on a slide coming out the side door.

When not travelling, the mattress could be removed to leave a 1.8m long place to carry stuff.

The problem is: am I flexible and spry enough to get in and out at night? :(

One word ,

Get a swag on a stretcher under your awning , Now that should harden you up a tad:cool:

That would be OK in summer. :)

Rocking gently to sleep in the back of a wagon during a windy night is quite pleasant, from my experience. :thumbsup: Tents are noisy.

Getting up requires caterpillaring out over the tailgate which you need to be able to open from the inside.:ohyes: Don't try to twist your way out of the side door.

I agree Ron, with the rear seats removed there is enough length to sleep in there (I've done it at 1.8m tall). It's pleasant enough with a rubber yoga mat below and a sleeping bag in winter. I wouldn't do it in summer!

It's better with the lower tailgate open and the upper tailgate closed, use shade cloth or insect mesh to prevent mozzies - works the charm.

I prefer the tent though!

Cheers

I wear earplugs. I learned that from going on LROC trips. There are some noisy campers after a few drinks around the fire! :D

And there lies an issue with the P38A! No internal access. I suppose one could add an internal release switch.

One needs one of the tailgate tents like this: SafariSoftshell.com tailgate tent car truck & SUV camping (http://www.xocom.com/ss/)

II prefer the tent though!

I'd keep the tent for longer stops but for overnight....

With the back seat removed from behind the drivers seat and the drivers seat moved forward I put a box on the floor of the back footwell to extend the length of the area. It works well for 1 or 2 nights by myself but not for an extended trip or if SWMBO comes along . I usually sleep with my feet up against the tailgate and get in and out through the rear door. The fridge fits on the passenger side in the rear cargo area. On a stormy night a very comfortable nights sleep can be had secure from the elements. Self inflating mattress also helps...I think I must be getting old lol

If you sleep in the back of the Rangie, does that mean its contents go into the tent?

Maybe the tent is the problem. I'm a big believer that a good tent goes up and comes down easily and quickly so that it's not a highlight of camping.

I travel light, any extra bits of food, clothing etc go on the front passenger seat, or stacked a bit higher on the opposite side to where I'm sleeping overnight.

Hey Ron check out my pics in earlier threads I did this with Fantom some time ago with fridge sliding out of driver rear door & storage behind that with drawers opening out of rear tailgate. I did this so I could leave passenger side rear seat in place & have been folding up at night when I sleep. Is a bit tight though so I have just removed that seat as well as I no longer carry passengers these days other than occasional ride somewhere with missus. I keep a small single blow up air mattress on board & sleeping bag. Works a treat, plus I created a split rear spare wheel hatch so I can access all the other stuff ( & there's quite a bit of room in there for tools chainsaw spares etc ) as I cant fit spare 33" muddie in there anyway. Also fitted light in there for finding stuff in dark.

Will be moving Becm from under driver seat into storage compartment near fridge soon too:):) so no more drownings! If that works well next will be computers under passenger seat. As you mentioned it also gives plenty of storage space when not being used or on way to camp spots too!

Thanks Martin. I hadn't followed that thread after the snorkel was finished. That's just what I was thinking of doing except for adding a drawer that is sideways sliding from within the bunk to put a book or magazine, reading glasses, medicine (stuff taken at bedtime) etc. into

I hope you don't mind but I split the drawer system posts out into a new thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/p38a-range-rover/222956-p38a-drawer-set-up.html.

It looks like I won't be reassembling the inside of my car this week after all. :p

I don't suppose you sketched it up with dimensions?
