Not sure what size rims you have, but check out Gordon's tyre spreadsheet for some ideas of what will fit in the various sizes without rubbing:

The popular sizes that I've seen for the D3/D4 looking at what members are fitting, more for availability in remote areas, 32" seems to be the largest without modifying the car;

I won't mention 19s, as I think if you have the D3, you probably have 18s as standard

265/60/18 is probably the most popular size that people move up to, anything larger and you have rubbing issues, which is where the link above may help, after this size you have 275/65/18 and 285/60/18.

Now if you can get or have 17" rims, you'll have a wider range to choose from, without any issues or mods to do.

245/70/17 30.5" or 747.9mm

265/65/17, 30.6" or 749.3mm

265/70/17, 31.6" or 802mm

I have 18's at the moment and preferably have tyres put onto them.
What do you think the chances of fitting 305 to these?

these are what i'm hoping will fit with minor or no rubbing

Largest diameter tyre with no significant rubbing is about 800mm diameter. The Deegan38's are 826mm.
Largest 18" tyres you could fit without suspension lift rods are 265/65R18 and 285/60R18 which are both about 800mm diameter. Check out the spreadsheet linked to in the earlier post.

Also 285 is as wide as you can go, or they will rub, 285s rub on the inner guard, the link to GOE shows how to get around that, also 285s or anything larger than 800mm will rub on the ARB Bullbar if you have one, but not the OL Bullbar, the ARB bar comes back further towards the wheel arch.

I'm looking for good MUD tyres that will fit my 18 inch rims but not rub. Please advise what tyres are going to be the best regardless of price. Is it easier to buy different size rims for a better range of tyres?

Achilles MTs are getting a good wrap and a cheap tyre too..

A very small adjustment to the lip with a linisher will sort that :)

i think that might be about your only option that definitely won't rub.

Thank you for your help everyone, just another quick question.
What exact adjustments would I have to make to fit larger tyres on? Would it be possible to fit 305's with the correct adjustments? Sorry I don't know much about this and I appreciate all the help given.

Never heard of anyone fitting 305's. They're simply too big. As with anything, as soon as you start modifying something you will be making compromises elsewhere to compensate for it. Be aware that wheels larger than 800mm diameter will most likely require a suspension lift to avoid rubbing. Also, with oversize tyres larger than 800mm, if you have an air suspension failure the car will drop to the stops and the vehicle can become physically immobilised by sitting on the tyre. Not a desirable situation if touring in the outback.
If you are touring on 18" rims, stick with either 265/60R18, 265/65R18 or 285/60R18 tyres.
If you are just wanting an oversized tyre to fit for weekend shenanigans, have read here about 275/65R18 oversized mud tyres and the required modifications:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/205260-mud-tyres-18-a.html
There is also Gordon's info on the earlier link I posted on how to modify your car to fit 275/65R18 tyres.

Wide rubber takes a shed load more fuel to drive, rub and increases turning circle.

Fairly certain Amarok rims will fit.
These ones will definitely fit:

Amarok rims will not fit a D3 or D4, centre hole is too small, 65mm for the Amarok, 73mm for the D3/D4/RRS, D3/D4 steel rims will fit the Amarok as long as they are not alloy rims, alloy are centralised by the centre hole, steel rims are not.

If you want steel rims for your D3/D4/RRS, you need to buy the specific rims for the D3/D4/RRS, or make sure the centre hole is 73mm as a minimum and make sure the load rating for the rims are suited to the D3/D4.

We have an Amarok in the family, it's our daughters car.

You're so helpful Baz it's honestly so good to have you help out. That list provided on green oval experience I assume the one that's says it fits that they fit without any sort of lift?

Ashley do you really want to drive on MT all the time? I would (and did) buy 17inch BMW rims for next to nothing. Use the much bigger range of MT rubber and leave road rubber on the 18s.
If your really in need of MT all the time fine but if not the noise hit and low on road traction read as safety make me put the 17 MTs on when needed. It only takes 30 -40 minutes to change 4 wheels for me and less if I can get the kids to help:)

I will be using them a lot but I am leaning towards buying a set of 17 inch rims for the MT so I will still have my original 18 inch rims there and if I know I won't be needing the MT's I will definitely be changing them over.

I think so yes, it is wise if you are planning to do any offroad stuff that is more than moderate, to have the rods or LLAMS system, they will help you immensely.

These do though, PM ~rich~ on what you need to do to fit the 285/60/18s if you go that way, or click on the link to find out.

The MAXXIS will require rods as stated below.

Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60R18 (requires slight modification (http://www.greenovalexperience.com/#!documents-info/cbbz) to fit)
Maxxis Bighorn MT LT275/65R18 (requires HS shortened rods (http://www.greenovalexperience.com/#!eas/cl9p) + modification (http://www.greenovalexperience.com/#!documents-info/cbbz) to fit)

Those rims and tyres are well priced, but make sure the centre hole is big enough to fit your D3.

Hey all, realise this is an old thread but it is specific to my question.
I found a set of X5 18”x8.5” star pattern, 5x120’s. Given these are the same dimensions as rims the Disco 3 SE came with, I assume these would also fit OK?
Anyone have any experience with these?
I gather you’d still need the Gorilla 15x1.5 3/16 acorn 21mm lug nuts?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Why waste your time with those when factory 18's are cheap enough.

Can we go a narrower tyre like 245 with a high sidewall say 75 to prevent the rubbing? Rubbing seems to be influenced by width.

I have just had fitted a set of Kumho AT52 in 265/70R18. Very slight rubbing on turning full lock. But I will look into more when I'm away from traffic noise. So far, pretty happy, quiet on the highway at 100-110 KPH in the wet.
Does anyone how how to reset the tyre size in the computer using a scan tool to correct the speedo? I did it with my old tyre change, but now I cant access it.

With a Gap tool I think it's in the IPC settings, you might want to try them out at access height and then see where they rub.

265/70? or 265/65 or 265/60?
265/70 is a "rub almost everywhere" tyre at 32.6" diameter. If your suspension drops you wont be driving anywhere.

They are 265/70 R18. I did have 265/60 R18 on it.
Not a lot of rubbing even at access height. A little bit on turning left full lock, over some bumps in the road. At normal height, a bit on left turning full lock only.
