View Full Version : Sunroof stuffed...

The sunroof in our 2008MY, late 2007-build FL2 has packed it in.

Was jammed in the closed position, tried to open it & it's stripped the gear in the motor. I guess one of the guides was broken which jammed it.

It's not closing properly, and you can hear a very loud clicking from the motor, like a stripped gear.

There was a recall on the sunroof for these models in the US.

There was also a world-wide service action on the sunroof, LTB00117v2, from 11th March 2008

Lots of complaints / threads on various internet forums about the sunroof in these models.

Since the roof was not closing properly (bad wind noise while driving) something had to be done. So I called up the local LR dealer to find out what this is gonna cost me.

Reply from the bloke over the phone (paraphrased).

- We never had any problems with the sunroof in the FL2
- There is no way to manually close the roof
- Bring it in and we will look at it
- I can't tell you how much it will cost to fix without seeing it

Nice... typical BS response

Well you can in fact manually open/close the roof. If you pop out the roof light in the back seat, you see the motor for the sunroof. There is an M4 hex / allen key drive on the motor. Turning this turns the motor, which moves the sunroof.

I've managed to get it "closed" that the wind noise is at a minimum, but watching the glass move as i turned it manually, it's definitely not moving evenly on both sides, so one of the guides is stuffed.

After reading up on the remove/replace process, it seems to be a time-consuming job, the roof lining has to come out and it's no fun getting the glass out if you want to re-use it.

Parts wise;

Motor, LR019777, UK price ?248 ($530)
Inserts, LR012676, UK price ?86 ($182) pair
Guides, LR009176, UK price ?14 ($30) pair

With the usual LR Aus pricing, plus around 2 days labour, I reckon it would be at least $3500 for the dealer to fix it.

Guess I just want to rant more than anything...

As much as I prefer to have stuff on my cars working correctly, in this case I think i'll just be pulling the fuse to the motor and pretending it's not there...

Thanks, I figured there would be an Australian recall as well, but the odds of LR covering this (the recall is from 6 years ago) is pretty slim.

They've also told me (when I enquired about the failed alternator) that there are no outstanding recalls or service actions on my vehicle.

Just need to build up some enthusiasm before I start down this road again...

There are other laws for fit for purpose or something along those lines with cars. I think this issue was re-broadcast on ABC Checkout program the other week. Have a look there, and also contact Fair Trading. A car might be out of warranty but it is still expected to last X number and the average life of cars in Australia is 10 years one, would expect a product to last at least this length of time. Opening a sunroof I doubt is general ware and tare.

I doubt anyone would have operated a sunroof that many times over 10 years that the mechanics of a properly design mechanism would fail.

Contact Fair Trading.

Recalls are recalls. I had a very old Seat Ibiza and it was recalled. I did not do it for about 12 months & I was reminded a few times until it was fixed.

I doubt this is actually a recall as it's not a safety related fault but if it is, Land Rover will carry it out under warranty if it hasn't been done already.
They did a couple of recalls on my then 14 year old RR.

It'd be classed as a recall in the US as some dirt might fall in their coffee.

Product information
Product description
MY2007 and MY2008 vehicles fitted with a sunroof.

What are the defects?

The sunroof may experience failure of either the left- or right-side sunroof guide rail which could cause the sunroof to become detached from its operating mechanism and bind. The operator may hear a cracking noise if this condition occurs. If this condition occurs, the sunroof glass panel will remain attached to its frame, but further attempts to operate will result in continued noise and abnormal operation due to the binding condition. If a vertical force is applied (for example customer manually aiding the sunroof to close or wind lift) the glass panel can become fully detached from the vehicle.

What are the hazards?
Malfunction

To me it is a safety issue if the sunroof can become fully detached and kill someone if it flies off while on a freeway!
