Leyland 4.4 V8 ?

Hi all,

I am looking at purchasing a Range Rover 2 door.
This vehicle is fitted with the 4.4 litre Leyland engine out of a Leyland P76 passenger car.

Can anyone tell me what they know about these engines? and if there are any problem area's to be aware of thanks.

Looking forward to getting back into the 4x4 scene, but I have very limited knowledge as to these model vehicles and engines.

1. They're a minimum of 41 years old.

2. They're prone to overheating in a Range Rover, especially one with a/c

3. They're prone to breaking cranks if frequently revved over 4000

4. Some parts are getting hard to find e.g. their main bearings are unique.

5. The block is about 20mm higher than a Rover block so they can only run P76 inlet manifolds unless you use potentially troublesome spacer plates.

6. But they have good torque and are fun to drive while they last.

7. And if they die you can just shove in any 3.5, 3.9 or 4.6 Rover engine and it'll go just fine.

Some of them were actually for Leyland Terrier trucks, IIRC they had a 441 prefix.

Back in the mid-late 1970's you could buy them from Mini Kingdom on Milpera Rd brand new in a crate for $500.
