View Full Version : No headlights

Just after some assistance,
I was driving tonight and went to flick my high beams on and poof no headlights at all, only parking lights.
I have an upgraded loom kit from traxide installed, so I would be quite ****ed off if it is the stalk switch.
Obviously I have checked all fuses.
I'm a bit stumped to be honest can't really think what it could be.

Did you also check the fuses in the relay that Traxide supplied?
Is there power getting to the above relay?
The other thought is check the original headlamp relay in the dash fuse box.
Mine will cut the headlamps out unless there is an ignition feed so worth investigating also.

Yeah all fuses are ok including the ones built into the relay unit. Will pull out multimeter tomorrow and look a bit closer, I wasn't aware there was another relay in the original headlight system will find that as well.
Cheers

Should be the right most relay in the cab/dash fuse box.

Mine did that and it was the headlight switch on the column.

IT wouldn't be the first time Ive see both high beam filaments out at the same time. or a filament out on one bulb and the high failed at the bulb/harness plug.

I had my high beam stalk fail.......with similar result.

Mine was poor earth. Pat

a bad earth on the traxide relay would cause those symptoms.

Most likely the headlight switch.

Problem solved, was a bad earth on the relay, seems the bracket I mounted it on decided to lose its earth. I have lights again now.
Thanks for all the helpful replies appreciate it

We had the same problem last night driving back from Exmouth. The temporary solution after checking all the connections was to disconnect the headlight relays and plug in the original Defender wiring. Lights came back on but unfortunately we had no spotties or lightbar but I was able to keep driving.
Going to be checking everything in the next few weeks to get it all working again but we did notice that the headlights had not been as bright as they have previously but when we plugged the original harness back in the lights were quite bright. I was thinking it may be a faulty relay but I'll check everything else first.

i also thought my headlights were not as bright as when I installed the loom and relay, didn't think anything of it, I reckon the bracket was vibrating and slowly losing its ground, until it decided to go completely. My lights are brighter than they were now after Running a proper earth wire from the relay base. It sounds like you've got the same problem.

I've got my earth running to an existing bolt which I added another nut to it but I have the earths for the Fyrlyt's and Lightbar running to the same point so I'll check that first.
Gotta say, wasn't happy driving country roads last night with 600W of lights switched off but you get that.

Where did you run your earth? A pic would be good if possible.

I found that using one of the guard bolts as an earth point was not a good move.
I added a earth strap left over from the winch install direct from the motor to the light/relay earth bolt.
Unfortunately lots of folk(myself included until recently) concentrate on the power side of things and neglect having the same capacity for the earth.

Did you run this to the same point of the existing earth strap from the battery or connect elsewhere on the chassis. I'm thinking I could run them to one of the bolts for the bullbar that goes through the chassis rails at the front unless there's an easier way.

I had to know so I just went and pulled the earth wire out and touched it to another bolt. Bingo the lights came on. Now I just need to figure out a better earth point.

Loneranger I ran my earth wire to a bolt on the water pump cause it's nice and close and a much better ground going by how good my lights are now

Fixed. I swapped out the connectors for ones with smaller holes at the same time and ran the light bar and headlights to the top bolt and the Fyrlyts to the bottom bolt on the water pump bracket.
Previously I had them connected to the 2 bolts for the bracket next to the water pump bracket.

A second earth wire from the middle S terminal is the advice Tim gave me,worked a treat. Pat

I've got the earth for both relays and the headlamps going to an existing hole on the inside of the RH guard.
I think the driving lights are earthed there too.
It's next the inner to outer guard stay bracket as I manufactured a bracket to fit the relays to there.
Off the same earth bolt I've run the earth lead from the winch kit to the air conditioner compressor mount.

Where did you guys mount the relays?

Mine are mounted behind the passenger side headlight. One onto the plastic wheel arch and 2 into the metal on the side. I managed to get a drill in there to put self tappers in.
