Hi
I am going under the knife at 13:30 on Monday and it is expected that I will be in hospital for about a week if all goes well.
I have been poked, prodded, scanned while glowing and had an ECG, good news is the only cancer is in my thyroid and on one lymph node and my mastoid muscle.
Other good news is that the surgeon doesn't expect that I will need to go to ICU and he will do his best to preserve my 11th Cranial nerve and as much of my mastoid muscle as he can.
Once I am able I will join the fray here once again :D

Our best wishes are with you.
A session with Dr Frankenstein and Nurse Vampira is not the most enjoyable thing to do.

All the best for you and your wife as well. Luckily for me thyroid cancer is one of the least aggressive and has remission rates around 95%

Steve, all the very best for the upcoming surgery. I hope you'll be back soon. If you are at Macquarie University Hospital, they have Internet at each bed.

Thanks Ron
I am at the Royal Newcastle Centre which is a state of the art facility, a part of John Hunter Hospital. My surgeon Daron Cope Dr Daron Harold Cope profile | Olive Institute Australia (http://oliveinstituteaustralia.com/drdaroncope/) (who is reputed to be one of the best ENT surgeons around) seems to prefer that to Newcastle Private and all the docs don't like either of the Gosford Hospitals very much at all.
I have the NBN at home and can connect with Telstra Air so I suspect once I recover a little I will be back online.
It may be a little longer before I get my head back under the bonnet of the beast though !
Regards
Steve

Well, you won't get my daughter who is an RN in ICU at the Mater - but you might at John Hunter where she is a Final Year Med Student.

Hi
Well 10 days instead of 5 to 7 and I am back home.
Turns our I had a parathyroid adenoma as well, a hyperactive gland. You have 4 of these and they control the calcium levels in your blood so when they removed the hyperactive one my calcium levels crashed because the others had gone to sleep.
Proper calcium levels are essential for heart function, so they have me on calcium tablets and took blood readings twice a day. They were not going to let me out until they were at least 2.0 .. 2.55 is ideal.
So it need to be monitored now twice a week until the remaining glands wake up enough to stabilise things.
The cancerous nodules and the thyroid are all gone and I have a nice scar from behind my right ear down the one around my neck !
Rest and recuperation is in order now
Thanks for all the messages of support :D

Stay strong.
