Hi All,

Terrifying discovery on my discovery this afternoon :(
After trying to hunt down "ticking" sound from the engine, I put my hand at the back of the engine, and there it is, puff puff on my fingers.. Additional symptoms are, slight coolant loss. Maybe 400 mL every 2000km (this I had since I bought it 2+ years ago). And gargling sound barely heard few times lately when stopped at the lights. Slight loss of power also noticed lately. I am still going thorough the searches and advices/stories/videos etc. Head needs to come off of course. ASSUMING that head is good enough, I plan just to replace head gasket using Elring composite. 360000 km on the engine. Not sure if head been off before.

Main point of the post is to share the pain, but...

- What causes these type of fault? Can it be just gasket itself or is there always underlying issue?
- What would be your advice to do / check while head is off?
- What is the current price to test the head?

Bearing in mind that this repair is leaning on budget rather that long term reliability. Also feel free to recommend a machine shop in Dandenong area that can skim the head if (God forbid) need be.

Thanx all!!!

It's common for gasket to let go there on high kms. Might just be an old gasket doing its thing. If all straight, simply replace gasket and use new head bolts.

It has lasted on average an extra 120000km. You should be happy with that. ☺

Thanx for the replies! I hope it's just gasket.

I have 2 hole gasket on. What would be outcome of installing 3 hole one? These holes look suspicious to me. Is it normal that one is only half visible?

Cheers!

Three hole is thicker so would ever so slightly reduce compression, probably no noticeable difference.

Finally a photo from my gasket. Does this 2 hole mark look normal?
