View Full Version : Fitting a Middle Centre seat in the perentie

hi guys - i'm looking to install a centre seat in the Perentie from Exmoor trim as my wife and i are currently planning on a trip and bringing our newborn along (the trip won't be until he can sit in a forward facing seat.
I'm hoping for some advice on the following.
1.) Where can i get the seat installation engineered in Sydney.
2.) Can i order the 3 point inertia reel belt that suits the centre seat from the UK and have it professionally installed or will i need to source something here. If i need to source from here where should i get the belt from?
3.) Given this is a hardtop 3 door with a bulkhead is there anyway the child seat anchor point can be easily affixed without a crab bar? Failing this i'm looking at installing a simple hoop rollbar for added safety - i would presume that i could request a child anchor point as part of this? Thoughts?
Now i know 3 across the front might not be many people's idea of comfort but we're willing to put up with this provided we can be all approved and legal.
Cheers

Thanks beast - just had a look at their website - they seem like they may be able to help. I know the seat is fine as the mounting points are ok but the seatbelt and anchor point arrangements have me puzzled.

The Army moved the seats approx. 20mm inboard ( you can see this by the plugged original holes in the seat box) I guess to give more elbow room.
The downside is that a standard County or Defender middle seat will not fit without moving the seats back to their original position.

Middle seat fits fine without disturbing drivers and passenger seat.
I did this mod over a year ago, only difference is I am using standard lap seat belt, not the type your thinking of using.

Must have just been mine that had the seats moved. I'll check out some at the next auction.:)

Thanks Bruce - yes it was your post somewhere else I read that made me sure it would fit. Nearly impossible to find the centre seat here though will have to order from the uk. Lap belt will probably be ok as will be used for a child seat but would be good to have the 3 point for future years.

Might be a modification, as when I removed my passenger seat there were no blanked off holes.
But now you have me thinking of how beneficial this modification might be...

Hi Bruce,
Looks good. I have a Series 111 Truck Cab as well as a Perentie. My Series has the 3 seats across the front and it has worked well for me over the last 15 years. My Series has 2 brackets that are part of a frame that is bolted to the transmission tunnel to locate the seat base and also 2 lugs that the of the Middle seat bolt into at the bottom of the back rest. It sort of acts like a hinge so the the seat back can fold forward and give access to the space behind the seat. Is this how your middle seat works? If so did you make up a frame or were you able to purchase it.
Also did you have to drill holes for the location of the lap sash middle seat belts or are their mounting points already in the floor of the Perentie for the mounting of a lap sash middle seatbelt?
Regards Warrick.

The standard middle seat, is different from the Series Landy. It is complete and no moving parts ( no hinge).
The seat belt holes are already in your perentie. I got mine from TR spares South Australia.
They do come up on ebay or other Landy spare parts outlets, just keep looking.

Cheers Bruce. Appreciate the information. Did you get both the seat and seat belts from TR Spares in South Australia?

Hi I ordered exmoor seat through John Craddock Ltd in the UK their delivery was a lot cheaper and seat price the same, have a look at their other spares if you are needing as they are a lot cheaper on some items. I have a perentie RFSV , and as DJ said I need to move my originals out in order to fit, I haven't seen the plugs but the corner mounting bolts are above the fuel tanks!, still getting there. Of interest it would fit directly into my 300TDI wagon on inveatigation....good luck

Of interest I was also informed that the rear facing seat in the RFSV is illegal in QLD as it has a 5 point harness, I'll try and catch up with an inspector soon to see how to overcome that obstacle, hopefully a lap belt will suffice.

Illegal in WA too. You could get around it but an automotive engineer has to sign off on it to be registered with the rear facing seat according to the inspector that signed off on ARN51745 at my local licensing centre.

I would like to know why. I know several people who have 5 point harnesses in their daily drives, a requirement for CAMS when they use them in track work.

Yeah Mick, It doesn't make sense to me, my opinion is that the 5 point harness would be the safest option, but will inform as we progress, another interesting point is that some of the RFSV's sold are registered as 3 seaters on the compliance plates so that is an interesting scenario, but I'm not sure if these vehicles have different seatbelts?

Thanks I have an appointment with mobility engineering on Friday to see what they reckon - also looking at getting a roll bar. It looks like I might have to swap the passenger and drivers seats to get it to for without the adjusters getting in the way.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this website and I'm trying to work my way around the site. I'm after some help. I have the option of buying a ffr perenti 1989 ex military vehicle. I have driven it and fell in love, the trouble I have is that I really need to install an additional seat for my daughter. She is 2 years of age. I understand there will be a cost to modifying the vehicle but what a vehicle to explore the Northern Territory in. My question is, is it possible to add additional seating into this model and for them to be compliant to allow children seats to be secured. Any help would be awesome. I don't want to miss out on the car but I need to think of my daughters safety as a priority. Thanks

You can fit a Defender middle seat in between the front seats but you might have to move the outside seats out to their original positions first. AFAIK they were moved inboard for the ADF but the original holes are still there, they are on mine anyway
A bigger issue is engineering the change to the number of seats
Best bet is go and speak to (face to face) a senior person at you local vehicle registry and find out from them if it will be allowed and the name of any local qualified motor engineers
If you go forward with the change he will tell you what mods he wants. Far better to speak to him before you do anything
The mod has been done by others here but good luck anyway
Regards
Phil

There is a GS for sale on Facebook that has seatbelts for the rear bench seats and apparently all legal. So it can't be impossible.

hi there is this a 4x4 perenti Which seat did you for to fit mate. I have a young daughter I need to put into a child seat so I'm guessing I would have to add a bar behind the seats in order to provide an anchor point for the child seat in the middle so it is compliant? Any ideas or advice would be grateful. Thanks

Morry that works there seemed confident it could be done and said he'd get back to me - I haven't heard anything back yet , but I'll call him soon as it's been around a fortnight. Edit: yes it's a 4x4 .KLR automotive can also definitely put the seat in but not sure about the child restraint. I was only trying to go through mobility for the child restraint as they're around the corner and also looking to get a roll Bar engineered

Wouldn't a CRAB bar from a 110 wagon work? It would have to go behind the front seats rather than the rear, but the capping is the same width apart.

Hi guys, I'm new to Aulro. I'm looking at swapping my 130 Dual Cab for a Perentie but only if I can fit a center seat and have anchor points fitted. I was wondering if anyone had it sorted out yet? 😀

Hey _ Could you send a link? Or is that the Td5 you are talking about? If so he said that came with the rear seat belts.

Hi Jerry777.
I have bought an RFSV as well and want to add a front centre seat. How did you go with your installation. Did you move the two seats outwards and get the imported seat to fit.
Did you need to take out the two fuel tanks..
Cheers Geoff

Hi everyone,
Have joined recently and following these threads. I have a Perentie and am keen on fitting the middle seat between the driver and passenger seat. Prefer 3 point seatbelt rather than lap sash.
Appreciate any more recent advice from the forum - seat model and purchase; installation tips etc.
Thanks

Hi All,
Does anyone know where I can go to get a third middle seat fitted to a Perentie in the Melbourne area.
I have two seats in the front and bench seats in the back so how can I tell how many people the truck can legally carry.
Thanks

If you have a look on the compliance plate, you should see it says 2 seat.
I have no answer for the possible next question you might ask "but it has seats in the back etc etc" So did a Unimog but it still isnt legal to carry 12 people in the back.

When I fitted a middle seat to my '85 County station wagon, it took it from a 9 to 10 seater, I first went to Vicroads who told me that if I could demonstrate that 10 seater was Factory standard issue, they would approve it. I fitted a seat & went back with a Sales brochure and a copy of a book on Land Rover history & they altered the Registration to 10 seats, but not the compliance plate. I later sold the vehicle no worries.
As per previous comments on this thread, it might be best to get factory aftermarket from UK which uses existing anchor points ( are they on a Perentie??)
otherwise you might be up for engineering certificate.
I guess I just raised a new problem there [tonguewink]

Thanks Deejay, I have been doing some more research at the weekend on this and noticed that when i took the cab seats out of the Perentie it does look like there are extra holes for a middle seat and belt, still i would need to compare it to a civilian 90/ 110 to confirm this.
I think i will be ordering a middle seat from the Exmoor trim in the UK and arrange for a VASS engineer to fit it and sign it off, plus go with a harness belt.

My understanding is that the 6x6 cab is wider than the 4x4, specifically because of the middle seat - so that 3 adults can sit in the front. You may be able to get a middle seat but it might be tight?

Hey
I know it has been many years but just wondering if you successfully got this done? If so, who fitted it for you? I'm also in Melbourne and keen to fit a front centre seat to my 110 Defender. Have ordered the spare seat from UK.
