Ok lots of probably stupid questions..
I have my new Puma Defender, my F100 needs work and my thought is to get rid of it and add a few extra dollars and get a 130 ute, first question can you get a Perentie in a 130?
Next question are all the Perentie engines the Isuzu 3.9 Diesel? Also were they all naturally aspirated or did some come with turbos?
What are the non turbo ones like for power, and is it safe to turbo the non turbo ones and what cost?
How old and what cost are the most recent ones?
I probably will think of more questions, but that is enough for starters.
Ooo actually one more how do you wax mat paint?
Cheers guys

No such thing here

No, The 4x4 is a 110 and the 6x6 is a 120/155.
There are some ex-mil 130's Defenders about but they are very rare.

4x4 generally n/a
6x6 were turbo'd

I don't know
How old and what cost are the most recent ones?
The 1996 6x6's were fetching between $20k and $35k.
I probably will think of more questions, but that is enough for starters.
Surely you can think of more such as "Do they come with cup holders". I bet you regret that username.
Ooo actually one more how do you wax mat paint?
Use lanolin, not wax.
Cheers guys
Chris
Yeah, cheers.

they turbo quite nicely even in NA form....
easy enough to mod the NA block to turbo spec as well and then you can give it a real lecturing...

Try ankor wax on the matt finish. A lot of rodders and the vw crowd swear by it.

Are you chasing the 4x4 or 6x6
I drove the 6x6 for many years......tried to avoid driving the 110's
Re: 6b, mine weighed in at a constant 5.5T, performed very well off road and on the beach.....we flogged it up and down the hi-way, pedal flat to the floor and would sit on 110/115km/h. Ear plugs or headphones fitted for the whole trip, motor screams and inside the cab is loader than 80db.
Ours were running some mods until MAS ordered them to be returned to standard. Fuel screw was adjusted, 3" exhaust, no mufflers, inner air cleaner removed and the end of air cleaner box removed........this actually made them very drivable.....just forget having a chat to your passenger if you want to sit on 110km/hr all day.
I believe some are fitting aftermarket turbo, inter coolers and taller diff ratios .......

depends on what you want to compare it to and who spoke to the pump last.

The 110 with the NA feels like a small pantec truck. Loaded up and wearing radials at 350kpa it goes okay in the 110 zones where there are long un-interrupted run ups to get over hills but in suburbia I hate a red light or a slow truck at the bottom of a hill because it spoils the run up and you have to go back to 3rd to maintain 70-80kmph.
Land Rover Perentie - REMLR Wiki (http://www.remlr.com/wiki/index.php'title=Land_Rover_Perentie)
I have a friend here with the KLR turbo fitted and it just eats hills -- so a turbo is on the To Do list.

I turbo-ed (and 3" mandrel exhaust) my Perentie 110 years ago. It makes quite a difference to driving in city, highway and sand driving. There is loads more torque and its quieter but not quiet.
A new Puma like you have just bought is probably a lot more comfortable and quiet on a long hot highway run, particularly if you've done a bit more sound proofing and fitted cruise control.
Power and torque wise I think a Puma and turbo-ed Isuzu are pretty close. The turbo-ed Isuzu probably does it a bit easier due to bucket loads of torque.
A perentie 110 like mine is about as comfortable (other than air con) and quiet as it gets being a wagon with lots of sound proofing. But its never going to be as comfortable as a new Puma.
However, the Perentie is as simple and easy to repair as a 110 gets. Its great in the bush if you need to do a repair. If there's a problem it basically comes down to fuel and air.
The electrics on a Perentie are quite basic really compared to a Puma. However, the Puma electrics are generally a lot newer and so more reliable.
The drive train on a Perentie is stronger than a Puma. A noisy 4 speed box on a perentie is something you will need to fix one day. But will probably not be a show stopper.

The F truck is a 4 speed box too so I am not too worried about that, tray size is more important, it is a pity they never did a 130. I do like the rag top though as tool boxes and stuff in the try will stay dry. I suppose there is always a trailer for big stuff and hey bails..

My advise for what it's worth is go and drive one
That will definitely make your mind up one way or another
The only similarity in the driving experience between the Perentie and Puma is the badge IMHO

The tray size on the 6x6 is larger than a 130, it is 3.2m x 2.2m.
With the two axles under the rear it would be great for hay bails.

Totally agree. Driving a Puma is about as exciting as driving a Ford Transit Van. Driving a Perentie is like driving a Land Rover!

It is something I will look into further, it will either be a 130 tray back or a Perentie. I am off to a shoot in Brisbane and today we drove 650km towing the caravan with the Defender. Before I bought the Defender I had terrible back pain after as little as 60km never mind over 600km so for that reason alone I am sold on Land Rover simply as I am enjoying pain free driving again.

An isri seat has the option of an arm rest. Makes a big difference on a long drive.

Seriously though if you want to buy a reliable Land Rover that has loads of useable torque and amazing off road capability then buy a Perentie. They are cheap, well built and comfortable to drive IMO and if you look after it, it will give you years of reliable service. Just don't expect to be driving around the outside of a Ford Transit Van on Turn One of the Nurburgring in a Perentie!
Regards Warrick.
