Hi All,

Im about to replace the clutch and acoustic matting on the Defender this weekend. As per usual the screws holding the floor panels and tunnel are rusted in place. Does anyone here have a quick tip on removal? I'm about to grind the heads off if the impact driver fails again. I'm going to replace them with SS replacements but just looking for tips right now.

I would imagine soaking them in penetrene or wd40 to start. Then using a normal driver bit as an engaged drift give them a wack with a hammer before the impact driver.

cold chisel with gentle persuasion. mine had a number of plastic inserts which are destroyed by the grinder heat or similar. as suggested soak in penetrene or wd prior to starting.

Some of the plastic receptacles can be reached from underneath and held with pliers or even pulled broken off. I would replace the plastic inserts, pretty easy to get. These Screws are mainly around gearbox tunnel and back near fire wall. The ones near the door are nut and bolt. Nuts can be accessed from under car.
Even the stainless steel ones rust. I have recently replaced mine again and would envisage doing every few years.

I’m about to do the same, just bought my first defender and it’s bolts n bits are very rusted. Any pointers in the best place to get screws n bolts? Better to order online from uk or aust?

Cheers!
Max

I was talking to Brad at KLR Automotive today and he says he has all the special bolts/screws in stock, including:
AB614061L #14 x 3/4" self tapping screws (I had a look and these are quite large in diameter).

He also has the screws 320045 with the ACME thread

155320

and

SE106201L panhead M6x20mm.
