Bit of a story here.
Went to start the beast and I normally check the display board at the bottom of dash and it came up "sport mode" !!
what the :censored:
Tried to start it .... nothing. bloody hell
Disconnected battery, waited 5-10 mins, connected back up.. still comes up with "sport mode".
Bloody hell.. there goes work for the avo/evening.. rang work to tell em I wont be in and then disconnected battery again and got it out and put it on charge.
A side note that may be connected to this....
My l/hand low beam went on me the other night, high beam still worked.
I put in another globe and checked to make sure it worked...yeap it did.
Went to work and that night the bulb wouldn't work. I checked to make sure the connector was ok and it came on.:)
Last night it didn't work, so this morning I changed the bulb over again and new bulb is OK..
COuld this changing over of the bulb and checking that the light worked(lights only on for minute or 2) discharge the battery that much that it then wont start.
My commute time is around 1/2 half hour with the last 15k's sitting on 80kph.
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks

Had battery on charge overnight.
Put it back in, connected everything back up.
Lights all come on then I get
HDC inactive
Trans failsafe program
Air susp inactive.
Nothing from the starter.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Where do I go from here to get my beast on the road again.
Thanks

Checked you battery and connections? On the same year disco this is a symptom of low battery voltage.

UPDATE
Called NRMA, battery man came out, couldnt get it to start.
He said do you want mechanic to come have a look. Yes please.
Mechanic came and had a look, got it going by shorting out the starter with the cable going to it. So no power getting to the starter.
Looks like a new cable may be needed me thinks.
Need electrician to sort it out he said.
Thanks I said..
Took beast for a run to see if charges the battery, but when I left it was a bit sluggish to get going, wouldnt change into overdrive, hdc, trans & air sus.errors still occurring with 4 lights on dash not going out.
Going to ring my electric bloke and see what time he can come out tomorrow now.

All sounds like low battery volts.
Ours did a similar thing a couple of years back - lots of faults, slow to start, sluggish running then no start. The starter had died and was dragging heaps of power from the battery. New battery and starter fixed it.
Yours sounds a little different as the starter cranked the engine when shorted but there are plenty of similarities that suggest low battery volts - have you checked the voltage while driving along?

Hi Baicicat,
Didn't have anything to check battery when I went for a drive.
Looks like its off to the stealers which I cant afford.
The beast is going to stay put until I get enough funds together.

My later model was doing all sorts of random things when I first bought it.
It started fine and apparently the battery was ok.
Nope.
I changed the battery and now all good.
The old battery would charge ok and also voltage seemed ok.

Mine is currently running a brand new battery flat if not driven for a month or so and that includes leaving it unlocked in a locked garage, alarm not armed and the key stored well away up in the house. The dealer has leak tested the electrical system and found no fault.
After charging battery, it will run really well for a couple of hundred highway kilometers and then suddenly throw phantom error codes inluding "Air Suspension Inactive", "HDC Inactive", ABS light on as well as a couple of others. This is commonly caused by low voltage events.
I've been advised by a reliable source (independent of my dealer) to replace the alternator. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and do it but at $1500 just to buy one I'm a bit nervous.

I'd throw a voltmeter on it and keep an eye on it before replacing the alternator. If it's always at least 14volts, you can rule that out as an issue :)
Is there something special about the alternator. Universal bosch 120ampers aren't that expensive .... you just modify the mount to fit them.

Unfortunately the alternators in the 4.4 are water cooled so there are limited options for replacement. The electrical load in the L322 is similar to the star ship Enterprise and just as expensive for associated parts.

Yep, under 200 quid, so my guess would be around $600 landed give or take depending on freight. I've used these guys before - usually deliver within 3 or 4 working days. They will give you options for freight when you place the order and you get an option to cancel if it is too steep for you. (Well they did last time I ordered from them. :) )

That's not actually the right alternator. That one's for the diesel.

Yep - that's the one he needs, he has the TD6, not the V8.

Good work. That would be close to the price of bringing in one from OS.

Check the starter relay, maybe?
Might help,
