Well nearly lost the new (96) disco in a ditch last night thanks to the useless pirelli scorpions (50% tread approx) and buckets full of rain and this was just going up my driveway!

Got a fairly steep grassy track going up to my weekender on the sunny coast and have never had a drama getting up it in any conditions in a variety of vehicles incl subarus, pajeros and swb cruisers but last night even with the diff locked, the disco decided it would prefer to be an excavator rather than an inclinator 8O and when it came to trying to backup for another run thats when things got really interesting  nearly sliding off the edge of the track into a meter deep drainage ditch

Anyway we both survived but its obviously time for some new tyres. The dilemna is I do a lot of highway miles so want something reasonably quite and efficient but still need a pattern that will cope with a steep muddy track on occasion. Is there such a beast? Was hoping not to spend more than $200 per tyre. Any recommendations on tyres and suppliers around SE QLD?

The current tyres are on the stock alloy rims and I considered one option would be to keep these and get a whole new set rims and all maybe slightly larger than the 235/70/16's currently fitted.

thanks for any help

Maurice

I've got Michelin road tyres on my std s1 Disco rims, but picked up a set of 5 15" Rangie rims with servicable tyres for only $200 out of the Trading Post.
Sincle replaced them with 31" muddies, giving me a good set for on-road & a good set for off-road.
Considering how cheap a set of rims can be if you keep your eyes open, that's what I would recommend.

Hi Maurice,

There is a set of (almost new) Bridgestone Mud Duelers on ebay in a 235x85R16 size ... including rims that will fit the Disco .... currently no bids .. sitting at $575. Might not be exactly what you looking for but at $575 for 4 new muddies and rims .. it might be the go.

Have a look ..

thanks for that info Henry,

they're local to me as well, the only problem I see is with the size, as I understood it Id need to trim the front and rear fenders going from this link http://members.shaw.ca/jbarge/tires.html

one dealer was talking up the toyos and reckoned they had been having problems with BFGs lately, he also wasnt a fan of coopers despite selling them.

A second hand set with rims would be my preferred option but if this rain keeps up Ill need to get something asap as Im quickly running out of food stuck up on top of the hill:wink:

i have GT savero AT's, they are a very good tyre and not as
expensive as most other brands. when they are on the disco
they cover all my expectations, a very good tyre.
their pattern is similar to the bfg at's., but a bit more open.

cheers phil.

I was wondering if anyone used Savero, who makes them so I have an idea of where to get them ?

Everyone round here is Baha Claw or Desert Dueler. The Savero look like they do the job for a cheap tyre better than say Trail Mark.

From my (current) experience on my 97 Disco, you definitely won't fit 235/85/16 (as on e-bay) unless you have some lift or guard surgery.
According to http://members.shaw.ca/jbarge/tires.html they are 32" diameter. My 31*10.5*15's are 30.5" diameter and they scrape the top of the rear guards in the rough stuff.
I've also had to trim the back of the front bumper to clear when turning. Apparently you can make a small metal brace to fit behind the bumper and actually push the outside edge of the bumper out to provide clearance, but I didn't have time to try that so I just trimmed with a Stanley knife.
The web-site above suggests that 31*10.5*15's will need spare wheel spacers, but I've had no probs with that, and not had any probs with steering stops either.

Cheers,
Ian
