D3 Satnav - To Update or Upgrade?

Hi all
I am a relatively new owner of a 2005 D3 HSE with factory Satnav. The map DVD is the original 2005 release (V10 I think). I want to Update/upgrade and am wondering what my best option might be. Apart from the maps now being hopelessly out of date, the functionality and user interface of the Satnav system itself is pretty ordinary. Does paying the $295 for the V20 DVD update from LR provide any improvement to the functionality of the Satnav or do I just get more streets?

As an alternative, what other upgrade options are available, either to the firmware of the DVD player I already have or new OEM or third party DVD/in-dash screen upgrades and do any of these upgrades still provide access to features such as 4x4 info (which I currently don't have activated) and the diagnostics hidden menu (753 menu)?

Any advice or experience in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Better to just use your smartphone!!!

I agree. Fit a smart phone carrier with a charger.

For about $99 you can get a well featured TomTom device from JB HiFi which will give you heaps more functionality than even an upgraded LR one will including speed camera warnings and advanced lane guidance etc.

Some have replaced the stereo, Nav head unit but it is not an easy process and seems to involve quite a bit of compromise. I wouldn't bother with that.

Thanks guys. I already have the TomTom app for my iPhone/iPad. I was looking not to have extra cables and devices cluttering up the cabin. I'm a believer in integration however it's a shame car manufacturers have made such a mess of in-car Nav systems! $295 is an absolute rip off for an upgrade - especially if I get no more functionality. I'll keep looking.

Hah, I am the opposite, or at least I think once you have started you might as well go all the way.

- 3 sucker Ram Mount with an iPad
- Tom Tom
- UHF mic with controls
- brake controller
- traxide dual battery switch
- spotlight switch
- battery voltage monitor
- power and sound cables for everything
- small flexible solar panels x 2
- e-Tag
- ocassionally a Go Pro.

I tried my iPad on the way to work this morning. Admittedly I had it sitting near the transmission console but the TomTom app kept reporting poor GPS signal. I'm assuming I would have the same issue if I purchased the HEMA app. Pitty I cant utilise the car's existsing GPS aerial.
