Hi Guys.
There is a 6T Kinchrome Hyd jack that looks like it suits our D4s for lift and min height. Its on special for $79.95 until sunday, see this thread.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/222778-new-jack-option-4.html

If anybody is interested in having a D3/D4 replacement head made post your interest here.Next time my boy is home I will get him to make me one on his lathe, will make extras based on the aprox numbers posted here.

No commit to buy as yet,the head will only be made to suit my jack(hopefully unscrew the old, screw on the new),unsure of the price,I wont be marking up what it costs my boy in material/tooling wear/tear.

Hi Andrew.

I'm interested in an adapter as well. How would this work? Would the existing top of the jack screw off and the adapter replace it or would the adapter sit on top and if so, how would it stay in place? Sorry but I don't know much about these things and would like to understand how it would work. :)

Nicky, you won't have to. Andrew is offering the adapter for the top of the jack to make it fit the chassis rail in a similar fashion to the OEM scissor jack. He's proposing to make up a bunch of adapters, not supply the jack itself.

Any reason you are choosing a 6T instead of the lighter 4T or 3T?

Reach. The 6t offers a minimum that's low enough and a maximum that's high enough. The other jacks do not.Have a look at the other thread by BSM. There's a link to it earlier in this thread, noting that you'd need to buy the jack yourself if this idea works out. EDIT; link added here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/180334-d3-jack-replacement-solution-sorts.html

Hope that clarifies.

Hi All,

This may be a silly question, the jack minimum reach is that based on a flat tyre including the adapter?

I see the jack serving 2 purposes for me, possibly others, changing from normal on-road 19" with GG to better off-road tyres/rims 18" and taller profiles and the repair of a flat on either!

The OEM jack as I recall is about 70-80mm when fully collapsed?

Gerald,

This is the other thread that may help answer re jack suitability. There could be an issue with the jack at its minimum with an adapter put on top of it but there's ways around that.

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/180334-d3-jack-replacement-solution-sorts.html

This thread helps explain situation and options quite well.

Whatever happens, I'll be keeping the OEM scissor jack in the vehicle anyway as a last resort, if it's down on the bump stops or if the bottle jack can't quite fit for some reason (eg uneven ground?). The scissor jack could be used to get just enough height for the bottle jack if it turns out to be slightly too tall.

Regarding changing wheels over from 19 to 18, this would usually be at home on a nice flat surface. In which case a trolley jack would be the best bet I think.

Or use the vehicle's suspension if you're at home to lift wheels for you. See link to Disco3 on 2nd page of the thread I've linked above (link copied here too) for an explanation.
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - A better way to jack it up? (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic84316.html)

Im hoping it will fit and secure to the jack in the same way the original is fitted to the jack.I mentioned my adapter will only fit the jack I buy, chances are it may fit yours, even if you need to weld it.I dont want to make a weld on adapter,I would prefer the adapter turned like they are designed to.

Normal RRP $114
Sale Price at the moment $79.95 (thanks Andrew). :D

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/08/148.jpg

The threaded height adjuster is a single piece (cannot remove the cap) and cannot be screwed completely out of the top of the jack, so adaptor will have to be a "slip over" fit.

I see that some of you are purchasing single-stage hydraulic jacks such as the kincrome 6T.

Please do more research before purchasing any of these as it is my firm belief that only a two-stage jack has a sufficient stoke to lift the D3/D4 via the chassis.

There are really only three important facts to consider
1. sufficient load rating (2000kg is enough)
2. short enough to fit under chassis with tyre deflated, and
3. long enough stroke to lift under chassis and fit an inflated tyre

The screw section is only of use in the first step - ie getting it under the chassis, after which it is only the stroke that is important.

Here is a much better alternative -
BST2000 Omega Jack
available from Blackwoods for approx $115 (less if you have an account)
2000kg telescopic 2 stroke
Min height 181mm
Max height 442mm
Stroke 201
Screw goes up 60mm

Several threads refer to this jack including http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/180334-d3-jack-replacement-solution-sorts.html .

Also Merc Sprinter jacks have been used but they are difficult to obtain and taller than the Omega to start with.

Hope this helps.

Thoughts are the plastic option,he is going to investigate which grade is required, machining on the lathe is easy, material expensive.
His other option is to get the 3 parts, washer base and pin laser cut and he will tig weld them,he thinks this will be the cheapest option.
We discussed making them on the lathe from steel, too slow thus more expensive.Aluminium may be cheaper as the machining is faster.
He is going to 3D print prototype at uni to see if its what we want, shame the plastic on that isnt structural grade!!!! Will see him on thursday.

Gents,

I've had this Toolex 2 stage jack under the rear seat of the D3, then D4 and now the current D4 since 2007. Works a treat, has the height and has never leaked.

The adaptors (I have a spare) were made by a mate and work equally well.

Note this jack won't fit under the car if its in limp mode. When this is the case I've used the LR to raise the car high enough to use the bottle jack.

My suggestion would be to machine it out of aluminium with the lower cup a relatively tight fit over the top of the jack. A simple belt with a mallet to the side of the cup (against a vice or anvil) would distort the cup enough to grip on the top of the jack. Crude but very easy to fit.

Cheers,
Chris

Thats where I've lifted mine from regularly...

Yep .................. that's where I position the trolley jack if I'm lifting mine out in the shed.

Have only ever had to use the OEM Land Rover jack once (in Tassie), and positioned that where it says to in the owner's manual (see ............ I DO read the instructions ............... sometimes). :p

Nearly had to figure out a way to use the OEM jack to get myself out of trouble out in the bush recently. Got stuck on a rather large rock under the LHS rock slider. Managed to get it off with the suspension though. :D

At least I got through the track though - the two rice burning 4WD's that were with me couldn't.

A little bit of panel beating required to the mounting brackets for the slider (didn't damage the tube itself though, which surprised me - they are stronger than they look).

My boy got back with a price.
He is going with the steel version AnD3ew posted.
We are going with a slip over the jack adapter, its never going to move under load, just keep the adapter in the door pocket or something,if you want to weld or put a set screw in,thats your choice.Best the jack can be used as it is sold.
It will be a 1 off run of 50,I told him min 25(to get a price) which we almost have,so I will have plenty of spares into the future.
He will get the parts laser cut and he will tig weld them,we are talking $12.00 per item, plus the aussie post P/H.
The quality will be tops.My boy is in his 3rd year of engineering at UWA,his poorest exam result sofar has been 86%,the best 99%,and lots in the 90% range.Must get him DNA tested;);););) Anything he has produced here of his lathe is awesome!!!!
No need to comit to a buy yet,I will get it all done, adapters made then will sort that bit out.He is posting me a plastic tester first.

My boy is the engineer, plus he also manages the coins on the UWA engineers racecar he helps build,he is the "chassis team leader".
He could sit there for hours and hours machining away on a lathe and produce the same product at a lot greater cost,or he can get the 3 bits laser cut from one of his teams sponsors then tig weld them together;);););).

Hi folks,

Following on from post above... Sorry if this question has been addressed but if it has, I can't find it. A bit confused. Based on the minimum lift requirement of 170mm from the other thread referenced above this 6T Kincrome will fall short, won't it? 'cos you (obviously) can't use the screw out top once under load.

Kincrome Hydraulic Bottle Jack 6000KG #K12052
FEATURES & SPECIFICATIONS
? Capacity : 6000KG
? Weight : 5.2KG
? Hydraulic Lift: 125mm
? Screw Extension : 70mm
? Overall Height Closed : 200mm
? Overall Height Open : 395mm
? Base Area: 169mm?
? Standard : AS/NZ 2693:2007
? Capacity : 6000KG
? Weight : 5.05KG
? Hydraulic Lift : 125MM
? Screw Extension : 80MM
? Overall Height Closed : 200MM
? Overall Height Open : 405mm
? Base Area : 120 x 115MM

So we should buy the Omega or similar dual stage jack instead?

Thanks,
David

I believe the simple answer to your question David is you need approx 200mm of stroke to lift a D4, which the Kincrome 6T jack does not have. I believe only a dual stage jack like the Omega will deliver this stroke length.

That is not to say that the adapter being the subject of this thread is not applicable to the Omega jack as well....

Thanks Chris,

Oh well, guess I'll be well set for bottle jacks then. :) Already ordered the Kincrome and it's on its way. Have now ordered an Omega from Blackwoods. hmm Good news is that as per Richard's post below this adapter still may suit.

I must admit I haven't measured but according to the specs on my jack , bst2000, the saddle diameter is 27.5

TELESCOPIC HYDRAULIC BOTTLE JACKS (http://www.shinnfu.com.au/_mgxroot/page_10843.html)

So if they have catered for 28mm it will fit.

Seems simple to me;);););)

The Jack head is actually 30mm,adapter will be 30.5mm internal with a set screw Im told.Measured a few jacks at the depot today, all seemed to share the same 30mm head,so it will fit others.

Here is the prototype. Its not quite right, pin is too tight, will now be 16mm instead of 17mm.Hole for jack head is wrong,28mm is too small, will be 30.5mm and a side set screw to secure it.
This is 3D laser printed, but he did make it in the 3 pieces as it will be made from laser cut steel.

In the Supercheap sale flyer received today, they are advertising a 4,000kg bottle jack on special for $23.97 from tomorrow (normal RRP is ~ $60). Made in China (surprise, surprise) but doesn't look too bad in the flesh. At least it has a fill point where you can drain / top up / replace the oil if you need to.

I had a look at one today, but didn't have a tape measure with me, and they wouldn't let me have one at the sale price until tomorrow. But at first glance of the specs in the flyer, it might do the job, with a working height range of 214mm to 430mm.

The only problem is that they don't state if that range is with the screw extension wound all the way in at both ends of the range, or if the "top" of the range is achieved with hydraulic stroke plus the screw wound out. Even looking at the box today and the instruction sheet, nowhere does it state the stroke.

Will be back there tomorrow with a tape measure and check for myself. I already have the Kinchrome 6,000kg jack outside on the bench - will see how the two compare.

They also have a 6 tonne bench press on special for $128 and an ultrasonic cleaner for $99 - tempted.

I have the order, they fit.I didnt get to aus post to get the postage cost yet.
Lindsay tells me they took much more work than he allowed for, maybe we can add a dollar or 2 to the unit price which I can pass back??? Thoughts guys.
I will get some pics loaded over the weekend.
I had a tour of his UWA Motorsport workshop,WOW,some of the things he showed me blew me away. Its all secret squirrel stuff so I couldnt take pics. The billet front steering units and their own CV joints were outstanding.
The sad bit is Lindsay and a couple of others are doing all the work, the chassis is only 90% welded together and they aint getting alot of help:mad::mad::mad::mad:
Alot to accomplish before the first week in December when they race it in Melbourne!!!!
Will let eastern taters know when the comp is on,there should be a big mob of unis competing, unfortunately I cant make it over.

Andy, I'm quite happy to pay whatever you think is fair provided I don't need to take out a second mortgage:p Seriously, charge what needs to be charged. I don't have a problem with paying the extra needed.

And there's no need to offer me a special deal because of that stunning photo of you and your D4 that I sent you earlier. :p:p:p

Happy to pay whatever you think is a fair price.
Should include a margin to reward you for your (and sons) time and effort in development, manufacture, postage and handling.

I see theres demand building for a second batch.

Maybe use a daylight saving scale.

QLD +2
SA +2.5
Vic, NSW, ACT & Tas +3 :wasntme:

Andy charge what you need to and make sure you're both not out of pocket. If it ends up too much for some I think there's enough of us queued up for the left overs.

Andy, being in Sydney I expect to pay more for postage than the guys in SA and WA for example. Leave it to you to decide. :)

From my past dealings with the local lady who runs the PO,its basically the same price to sent it all over australia, its an ebay introduced thing, the loverly post pack!!!!,she always comes up with the best/cheapest method, thats why I didnt visit a Perth PO,they will tell you a $15 post bag which may not be the cheapest method but the most profitable;););););)

OK.
I went to the PO today,I can get a post pack inc postage buying the 50,in one hit for $7.90ea,so I will call postage/packing and handling $8.00 to call it even.Originally Lindsay quoted me $12.00 ea,I would like to call them $14.00ea and slip him another $100 once I clear them all.So that is $22.00 delivered.
Is everyone cool with this????
Dont PM me yet,I will set up a thread in group deals with a link from here tommorow or the next day at which stage I will lock this thread.PLEASE if you no longer want one please let me know as I have others wanting one,the original 49 and mine go to the original 50 people who put their hands up first.
Thanks
