i have an old 40l engel fridge in the ex's 4wd. looks to be 30-40 years old.

how much power should it be consuming, both at peak and over 24h?

The old ones use quite a lot of power.
My 2000 model uses about 4amps at peak, and about 40 AH over 24 hours.
I think the old lemon coloured ones use even more.
There is a test of one in the Australian camper trailer forum .
Of course it depends on the temperatures how much they use and that 40AH is in say 30C daytime and 22 or so at night and opened several times for breakfast lunch and dinner, and drinks.

Peak instaneous, a couple of seconds, or for more than minute?

They seem to have got increasingly efficient with newer models, or I guess you could translate that to increasingly inefficient with older models. I have a 2000 model 40 litre, iirc it draws about 2.5a while running, bought an older plastic-cased 29L model and it draws 4a. 6a in a 40yo fridge would not be surprising.

as they get older the power supply parts fail on teh 12v inverter side.

if they still run and work properly on 240v you can run them off of a cheap 150w coke can inverter and the total amps draw on the batery is usualy on par with or better than the old engle 12v supply stick it on a good sine wave 300w inverter and I've seen it go down under the original nominal draw.

It doesn't matter how many amps your Engel draws when it's been stolen from your backyard!! My 15 year old 40l was nicked from my laundry at the back of my place full of beer! The old motor was beginning to struggle at times, the lid seal was shot, hate to think how much power it's drawing for its proud new owner 😢

All the cops could say was 'it was full of beer! that's bloody unAustralian.'

Apparently the trade in stolen Engels is massive and organised across state borders! It's almost impossible to identify fridges to owners even if they are found, unless the owner has marked their fridge with a name or verifiable number. They're being nicked out of the back of utes especially, so bolt them down or lock em away guys.

Do the newer refrigerators draw less current but run for longer, therefore using more energy overall?
