Hi All,
I have found a local company in Australia that are making carpet kits for Classic Range Rovers (amongst other vehicles).
You can find them at:
Ausclassics - Restorations - Moulded Car Carpets - Auto Memorabillia (http://www.ausclassics.com.au/)
14 different colours
2 and 4 door Range Rover Classics
Located in Victoria
The guy that I have been speaking to is Stuart Brown
They are about to start a production run - so if anybody is interested may I suggest that you contact them!
Cheers,
The Grey Ghost

I think this guy may be only the second person in the world to start doing 4 door RRC carpets - and the only one in Aus doing 2 doors at the moment. Although the moulds exist for the 2 door, I know at least one factory that has them simply won't run them any more. They are available from old blighty for around 400 quid for a full set, but after shipping - nearly another 400 quid, and currency conversion, you won't see any change from $1,600. This local option will be just about half that I believe, so the local option is a bargain!
GG has put a lot of effort in to get this guy to commit to doing some - and finsihing of the 4 door moulds for me, so if anyone has been thinking about this, now is the time. Stuart is a good guy who is easy to talk to, so make the call and order a set. :)
I'll make this thread a sticky as well well I think.

Hi BigJon,
I am guessing that they aren't listed - because the company has only decided to re-make them after some harassing from me!
I can't answer the question about the carpet up the gearstick - you might want to check with Stuart directly.
He told me that he was making up copies for the 2 Door (and 4 Door) because he has these vehicles in his family, so hopefully he is copying 100% to the original specifications...
Cheers,

Hi Jon, as GG said, this has been a work in progress for some time - I tried a couple od years back to get him to start on them, but with only 1 order I don't think he was too interested. Now he has a firm order for 1 x 2 door set and 1 x 4 door set I think he is more enthusiastic. If a couple more orders were added it would help heaps.
He has, and has resotred both 2 and 4 doors in the past and has a couple in his current collection so I would imagine they should be an exact copy, but as GG said - give him a call as if he sees more interest from other parties it will make his day. :)

I've been in contact with Stuart in the last few days for a Nissan Pulsar floor mat.
He was not in the work shop last week from what I could gather.
I will be sending him an e-mail latter in the day and will ask on your behalf.
His web site as linked in post one has a listing for- Range Rover 2 door 1972-1984
He is rebuilding a 2 door Rangie also.

Stuart emailed me a few days ago with a response to my enquiry. To be fair I did have a lot of detailed questions in my email to him - regarding the reproduction and whether or not it was going to be the same as the original or in moulded halves etc... Stuart was very good with his reply.
He's definitely got a handle on where he's currently at.
"Hi Joe
We are going to do both 2 and 4 door kits.
It will take us a while to get all the patterns and moulds together.
We will probably offer both moulded halves and original configuration.
Price is yet to be worked out.
I can get many and varied carpets from different places (Imported carpet will cost more than local stuff)
I will be able to do pieces but will prefer to do kits as the tooling up is going to cost us a bit.
I will keep you informed on progress.
Cheers Stuart"

they will be available by March if not sooner.
They will include

Tailgate
Wheel arches
Spare Wheel cover

Will have more details very soon.

I will continue to keep in contact with Stuart - as I have explored getting carpet sets out of the UK, and the freight costs are simply crazy!

What chance of carpets for in front of the rear seats for a LSE (+8 inches from memory)??
Justinb
1st March 2016, 10:52 PM
Gavin,
I'm not optimistic regarding the LSE carpets.
I rang Stuart 6 months ago when my LSE was stripped and the body on a hoist and it was only 20 minutes drive away from Ballan. He went over and had a look but some trim was still inside so not suitable to take a mould straight away.
The LSE is now at home assembled ready for rego ( almost ) and probably no use to him now .

Les Richmond did new Carpets in my LSE recently. If you have the original carpets to work off, any good trim shop should be able to do it.

Hi Guys,
Received my response this morning from Stuart:
Hi Joe
The 2 Door kit is currently in the mould process.
This will mean we can do the complete 4 door set except the tunnel too
Then we will be onto the 4 door tunnel.
I will be needing a shell to make the tunnel mould if you know of one anywhere.
We will be able to do vinyl flooring too
And we make protection over mats as well.
The carpet can be washed as well and the three main mats will be removable like in the original sets
Cheers Stuart
So if anyone knows where a stripped out RRC is to get a tunnel mould, please get in touch.
cheers,
Joe

Yes, that is what Stuart is looking for, but in a 4 door, however I don't think you're going to drive it to Ballan.
He's looking for a donor shell methinks. If you know anyone between say Bendigo and Melbourne who has one, let Stuart know or post it here...

I think so -
I posted verbatim the response I received from Stuart yesterday, so it sounds like he's well & truly on the way to producing 2 door sets.
Well, that is what the tone of his response says - Bear in mind, my query only related to 4 door carpet sets, which he's delayed on due to not having the tunnel section for a 4 door.

Hi all and thanks for the interest with the carpet sets.
It is only through this interest that we have been able to justify the expense of making moulds from scratch and undertaking these once more.
Sorry this has been a drawn out process but we had to be a little careful not to over extend ourselves, had trouble with previous suppliers (who destroyed previous moulds) and then made a very popular product ( Jaguar carpet sets) and were swamped with orders.
We also had a problem with our council and had to get rid of our donor 4 door unfortunately.
So now we have the 2 door sets almost ready to go and the 4 door ones not far away.
We have yet to finalise final pricing but that will happen soon.
We will have two versions with and without the 4 speed lever cover to allow for different gearbox configurations.
Once completed I will advertise them in the Vendor section of the AULRO.com section.
Please continue to register your interest and those who have indeed sent through orders will be the first invoiced and done...
Cheers Stuart

A Few of us received an email from Stuart the other night, and the update is good news for half of us - (the half of us who own earlier RRC's)
Below is an excerpt of the email I received.
Note, Stuart will likely amend the offerings once's he's up & running
Please check the vendor section for his listing, as this will obviously not remain current.
We can do all the 2 and 4 doors up until the tunnel changed in the mid 80s -
(when the Hand Brake moved to behind the shifter)
The full kit will contain:
Moulded tunnel and 2 moulded wheel arches (with optional gear shift boot)
Rear floor piece
Front of rear seat piece
Front Seat Bases
Cargo Mat
Spare Wheel Cover
Tool Cover
Tailgate
Vinyl Mats for Front & Rear
The floor mats will have the vinyl strips on them which slide under the sill plates too.
I am also going to offer a smaller kit, consisting of the following:
Moulded tunnel and 2 moulded wheel arches (with optional gear shift boot)
Rear floor piece
Cargo Mat
Spare Wheel Cover for the earlier cars, with options for it- to follow
I can do the hardura/vinyl tool cover for these earlier cars as an option too.
We are also working on two different under bonnet pads, one complete bonnet one and one like the original which fits between the ribs
We can do many other colours than those attached but the price will be a premium because the carpet has to come from the USA
Also available is binding in original style vinyl for those doing authentic restorations.
Delivery will be 3-4 weeks from confirmed order, perhaps sooner.
P.S. Does anyone have an original gear shift boot section I can copy?
P.P.S. please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Hi All
Thanks for the patience with this it has been an enormous task getting this right and on Tuesday I cut out the first set of carpets which will be finished this week for photographs.
We have set ourselves up as others have reported here to do the entire carpet sets which gradually developed in the cars from passenger area carpets to the entire interior.
This includes:
Set of three vinyl floor mats (in black, milk chocolate or grey at this stage)
- these go under the carpets in the passenger positions as originally fitted. They include the tabs which slip under the sill plates.
Moulded centre tunnel carpet (with manual gear lever cover fitted for 4 speed where required)
Two front & one rear mats ( heavy backed like in the later 80s cars helping fit, aesthetics and sound deadening) fully bound and with vinyl locating strip for under sill plates as per originals.
Rear seat base carpet strip.
Moulded rear wheel arch carpets
Full cargo mat, heavy backed
Spare Wheel cover including reinforcement strip for location near the window
Tool cover (optionally can be made in hardura)
Tailgate cover (optionally can include the backing board, comes with binding)
We also have two seat base cover carpets for the front and I am looking into doing front kick panels like Holdens .
The kit is available at this time for all cars 2 or 4 door which use the original style tunnel ( I believe his is up until the handbrake moved to the centre console)
Fit is spot on ( much better than any alternative I have seen)
The introduction price for the entire kit is $1520 delivered in Australia
We will have parts kits available and can make them as per original using vinyl binding (POA).
To put this into perspective the average Jaguar kit we make uses 5m of carpet
The biggest boot kit (XJS) we use 5m of carpet and these kits are using nearly 12
They are also a lot more work to make with the moulding/sewing etc and include the vinyl too.
Indvidual parts are
Vinyl mat set of 3 120
Front carpets 120
Tunnel Piece 200
Seat Bases 40
Kick Panels 100
Rear Carpet 120
Rear Seat Base 60
Wheel Arches 140
Cargo 230
Tailgate 90 (+ board if req)
Spare Wheel Cover 220
Tool Cover 60 ($120 in Hardura)
Total $1500
So please give me a call or message on 0400995515 and I'll call you.
I'll put the pics up as soon as complete
Cheers Stuart

So I didn't receive my carpets until the day before I left to do the Canning and since returning I have had an average of 2hrs a night to fit them.
As of tonight I can category say that the front carpets won't fit the EFIs. I have cut and heated and wasted so many hours trying to make it fit, but it's no use..
If anybody plans to update their carpets in a later model, dont! Wait until Ausclassics can offer a updated set or get them from somewhere else.
I regret doing this. I regret spending the money. I regret waiting nine months for them to be made. I am just so unhappy with the way it has turned out.

Good to hear that you are finally getting the later model RRC's underway. Which was what you also told me when I rang you in August last year to ask for your help and instruction on how to make my tunnel carpets fit. Which they eventually did, albeit terribly.
My final concerns were with the front carpets. The mats are different between the pre and post EFI also, not just the tunnel carpets, as the way the seats are mounted are different. Actually, I remember your surprise when I mentioned this whilst talking about the tunnel carpet.
I attempted twice to contact you regarding these front carpets after we spoke about the tunnel carpet and like the other twenty plus times I had tried to call or the ten plus emails I sent over the time from October 17 to the week before I received my carpets in July 18, I received no response - so I simply gave up.
When money allows it, I will be importing a set that will fit from overseas.
With that, I have a set of cab carpets (minus tunnel obviously) in Slate Grey available for pre EFI RRC if anyone is interested.
Good luck Stuart, I really hope you get these carpets sorted, as they are good quality and well made, just not fit for my purpose.

G'day, Thanks for the inquiry...
Current lead time is a month due to the sheer volume of work we have.
There is currently 4 full sets stacked in front of the sewing machine and 5 went the week to all parts of the globe along with 11 partial kits too.
SO the sooner you can get in the list the better

I got some carpets of this guy (Stu Brown) for my 89 manual classis. He took a long time to get them done but it was at the time when we right in the guts of the Covid thing so cut a bit of slack for that. I still haven't fitted them, but they seem to be very well made and I'm super happy with them.
If you wanted to get some and you could pin him down for long enough, I think he'd do a very good job.
Kind regards

Does he provide the OEM colours? Late (93) 4-door automatic.
He was only just getting going on RR carpets when I got mine. My carpets are Wesminster Grey and they're are so close it's not funny. I don't know if he could supply the actual factory colours. I think I might've just got lucky.
Regards
