Just about to get started on this and thought I'd share my plans in case anyone has any input.
I like Rich's antenna mount on the roof rail so I'm going to copy that: :)http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/149036-show-us-antennas-your-d4-d3.html (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/149036-show-us-antennas-your-d4-d3.html)
Threading the cable through as per this instruction: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic40474.html?highlight=antenna (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic40474.html?highlight=antenna)
This won't suit everyone but as I don't have rear air con / climate control I'm going to mount the radio head unit in the space above where the tow hitch lives on the passenger side of the cargo compartment. I thought about under the seat but like this spot being a bit higher.
I have power from my Traxide DBS close by (I like the idea of powering the radio from this - the unit has auto switch off) and antenna is easy to route here. I will then run an extension cable for the microphone/handset unit along under the passenger sill, under passenger seat and put the 8pin RJ45 connector probably between the seat and the centre console.
When I'm not using the radio I can just unplug the handset. Still deliberating about the microphone clip mount but might use one of these: ProClip?Land?654412?|?Brodit (http://www.brodit.com/product.html?id=654412&pn=prod&brand=Land) Rover&model=Discovery4&year=2014 (they have another one which mounts low on the passenger side too) or maybe fabricate one like Rich's.
In that compartment in the cargo area there is a convenient nutsert (for mounting the climate control unit) which I can use to mount a strap to which I will then mount the radio base to. There is a bit of craft to attach - most likely clamp- the top end of this strap without drilling a hole. I'll post up some pics once I've done it.
Next update with pics...

I look forward to seeing your install David.
I mounted my aerial up the front using one of the roof track holes. The cable runs down behind the A pillar trim.

David,
I am keen to see how you do this bit in particular ...
..... under passenger seat and put the 8pin RJ45 connector probably between the seat and the centre console. When I'm not using the radio I can just unplug the handset.....
I unplug the antenna and head unit power when not in use and leave them between the seat and console. But it's not well done and untidy.
So please include this aspect in your write-up and photos please. :)
Cheers,
Scott

Mine is mounted under the passenger seat.I attatched the plastic mike clip to the fascia next to the rhs ciggy lighter with sillycum,I did have double sided sticky gel patches put they fail in hot weather.Looks neat enough, cables run under console.

I posted this on the Facebook page a few weeks ago.
I mounted my Icom IC-440 under the lid of the centre console cubby. The power I took from the socket that would normally supply the centre console cubby cooler. I had to separate the cubby lid to allow me to attach the supplied UHF mounting bracket. There was a bit of trial and error with this as the first time I mounted it and slid the head unit in, the lid wouldn't close. I then purchased a black Cat 5/6 Ethernet socket and panel bezel from an electrical wholesaler and cut a hole on the sloping panel just in front of the cubby space to mount it. I cut the supplied handpiece cable and re terminated it on the socket. This is a neat solution which then allows me to unplug the handpiece when not in use. I also use the Labtronix aerial bracket. It's a bit pricey but saves heaps of time and no holes need to be drilled.
Some useful videos on console and cooler removal.

I'm another of the under the seat mob, and have my microphone socket mounted between the seat and the centre console.
All works well, my only issue is mounting the Mic holder, I tried some industrial grade double sided tape but like Andy says that fails after a few hot days, for now it lives in the drivers cup holder when I have it plugged in.
I have one of those brodit clips for my phone, it's great but I found I needed to print an extension for it otherwise whatever you mount to it will get in the way of the indicator stalk.
In my case the phone + holder is not as deep as the 440N Mic + holder so I think you'll have a serious clearance problem with that approach.
Here are some photos to show you what I mean.

Thanks for that. I'll probably go for the custom bracket like Rich or maybe the Brodit clip that mounts low on the passenger side of the console.

Used a LHD low mount (so it's on the RHS of a RHD vehicle) that I re-angled the mike / phone mounting surface by cutting it off, cutting and filing the stand-off piece so it is angled towards the driver then gluing and screwing the mounting piece back on.

Thanks Ron,
That is the low clip I was referring to (Brodit Proclip) but I really like your re-angling of the mount - I'll definitely copy that!
The ClicOn clip has a Brodit clip part number and look identical. (Angled Mount | HoldMyPhone (http://holdmyphone-px.rtrk.com.au/angled-mount-72852.html))
I like it - just ordered one.

Looks like the LHD (mounts RHS) clip part # 854413 may not be available locally. Only #654413 RHS (mounts LHS) showing.
I've dropped a note off to holdmyphone to see if they can supply...otherwise will have to come from US by the look of it.

I'm interested in this. Does it cause any problems with where it sits in relation to your left leg. I'm tall and my knee sits against that spot on the console.

I've bought a fair bit of stuff from them, usually about 25% cheaper than local seller - even after freight. Mind you, the "pacific peso" has really taken a battering lately. :o
FWIW, I have Brodit dashmounts on both sides - drivers side has mic clip for Icom IC440 and passenger side has phone holder. I had the Icom under the passenger seat, but later moved it under the steering column. (I have plans to use the space under the seat for another project).

As usual this is taking longer than I'd expected. Life in general getting in the way! I've now made some progress:
 - made my bracket to mount the head unit in the rear cargo area where the rear air conditioning unit would go.  There is a M6 nutsert on the lower pinchwelded seam and I drilled a hole for the top one to mount it;
 - copied Rich's antenna mount, painted and mounted it; and
 - run a 5m cat 6 cable along the sill under the cover and under the front passenger seat. It's visible only about 10mm between sill cover and seat base trim. Was thinking of running under the carpet but I think it's pretty safe there and not really noticeable.

It's tucked away nicely in there with power from my Traxide DBS so always on (it has auto-off function) and the antenna up above.
I've just received the Brodit bracket that clips on the driver's side of the console like Ron's (rufusking) from the UK but like Martin want to check if that will be in the way of where I rest my leg. Hopefully tonight.
As far as mounting the RJ45 socket for the microphone I'm experimenting with a few ideas. If I can install a panel mount RJ45 socket somewhere that's an option but I generally avoid cutting holes when I can. I did look at the underside of the console when I was running the reversing camera wiring and there aren't many clear spots to mount a socket
Leaning more to a clip (experimenting with a cheap ebay money clip currently) with an inline RJ45 female glued on but with a press stud to allow it to pivot and relieve the load. May also be able to attach the socket to the back of the Brodit bracket... Will update on this later.

Hi All,
For those who may be interested. I like making brackets and solutions that retains all the original set-up ( 2 small 2mm holes in ash tray base mount that is hiding once the ash tray is re-installed.
I wanted to mount my CB head where I could see the display and use the controls, and find a safe place to store the mic and cord. My set-up allows access to all controls as is.
Therefore I discarded the ashtray and used it's retractable mounting base to mount my remote head.
I have also developed an extremely stable iPad mount from 30mm profile aluminium, this can be removed in 30 seconds using the existing passenger seat slide rail to mount the L post and a complete home brew iPad holder.
The radio, iPad holder and iPad L mount all work very well together and with Zero interference to the passenger, clears glove box, swivels between driver and passenger up and down, uses bad elf DC charge.

Has work without issue for 3.5 years.

A quick update - I pulled the lower console off yesterday to look for a position for my clip to mount the mic socket.
Hoping to slide this money clip in to a spot where I can then use it to attach the RJ45 socket. Very few places to slide it in due to the shape of the mouldings but did eventually find that it fitted nicely in this position. No lateral movement and once the console is repositioned over the top of it, it is very snug. Out of the way of the seat and my leg and puts the mic cable in a good position in relation to the hanger clip above. I'll post a photo once I've fixed it.

Was thinking to use this press stud for a bit of strain relief (as it will rotate) by epoxying each half - one to the clip, one to the connector. I could just glue the connector to the clip of course. Still pondering the fixing of this - open to suggestions...
I also cut the right half of the 'face plate' of the ProClip off to keep it away from my leg - it is still wide enough to mount the mic clip. I'll post a photo of this later.

I cut the 'face' of the clip in half for the mic clip and tried the press stud but it just doesn't have a strong enough hold to stay on when the cable twists.
Just going to glue (or tape or maybe Velcro) an RJ45 connector to it, put a bit of braided sleeve over the last part of the cable running beside the seat and call it done.

Looking backwards from passenger footwell
The GME TX3350 comes with a double-sided Cat6 connector for the connection of the handpiece to the main unit similar to the other units mentioned.
After a lot of thought about options, I decided to locate it in the cupholder between the two cup positions.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/09/14.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/27.jpg
This required a hole to be cut into the cupholder, which may not be for everyone. My reasoning is:
- it gives a very neat and hidden finish.
- the mic cable is perfectly located for use by both navigator and driver with minimum cable stretch.
- the cupholder is an easily replacable item if required later.
For the handpiece I'm using the supplied bracket and have mounted it using 3M Command Strip, which is similar to Velcro but stronger.
It has a strong self-adhesive tape backing but is removable without leaving residue by pulling the tabs.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/01/161.jpg
The handpiece will live in a small bag in the centre console storage box when not in use. Very happy with the result.

Scott

Looking the goods Scott, I think a great upgrade from your previous setup and you've given me some good ideas for my handset location.
I've just started my install. I also used the passenger side empty bracket though went for a more low-tech setup. Basically I've bent down one of the tabs and using one of the bolts have attached the provided icom bracket (with a small piece of double-sided tape). Aside from cutting off a few threads of the bolt to stop it fouling it was about as easy an install as you can get and very easy to add/remove.
I'm going for the roof gutter mount antenna (drivers side), but don't have any pics of that yet, also very straightforward using the antenna recommended to me by Prestige Comms which has a right angle fitting

Nice Scott. Liking your idea here of using the cup holder I installed the RJ45 microphone socket as per below. I must confess the drilling, cutting and filing is not my finest work but happy with the position of the socket and the drip tray underneath stays in place. If I was doing it again (and I might just to make it a bit tidier - depends how much another cup holder will cost!) I'd probably try to mount the socket so it is positioned at a ~45 degree angle through the side of the cup holder - this would take more careful cutting and gluing probably.
The connector I used:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
The end result:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=106317&stc=1&d=1456696955
Haven't shown the slot cut in the cup holder below the socket to accommodate the RJ45 plug because it is a bit untidy but because of the position of it, you really don't see it from anywhere you'd normally be in the car.

G'day all,
Here's my completed install. Really happy with it. Took inspiration from various people along the way so thought I'd share for anyones future reference.
The main unit is mounted under the passenger seat as per my previous post HERE (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/224534-icom-ic-450n-installation-plan-3.html#post2484323).
The antenna mount was very easy to make and is ideally suited to the antenna I was recommended when purchasing given it's right angle attachment. Again, details of this model are in my previous post.
For the handheld, the extension cable runs under the back of the centre console which for those planning to attempt has an obvious 'step up' on each side where its easy to feed through. I've mounted it on the inside of the centre console with double sided tape. The seat only just presses against it too, so that helps it from trying to fall off.
I took other's recommendations and bought the Brodit centre console brackets from DSL Developments in the UK. Great fit and easy to put on and off as you require, no need to use the double sided tape if you just want to use when touring. I ended up buying one for each side, and we've mounted a Garmin swivel on the other side which after thinking about doing factory stereo integration is really all I need (and very cheap!). I like the Garmin platform for my waypoints and offroad mapping and having on this mount only when touring is the best of both worlds.

Last pic.
The reason I went with that spot for the extension cable is when you pick up the hand piece to talk you don't need to pull on the coil cable much to get the reach, unless its the passenger that wants to talk.
Also, others have discussed the Brodit clip sitting in a spot where you rest your left knee. I'm 6 foot and my knee sits above and behind it, though for those with shorter legs it might be at the same height.

I have mounted my Icom IC-450 in same position (see photo). Just had to 'enlarge' some of the cutouts on the Icom supplied mounting tray to allow a couple of M6x10 Button heads for a near perfect fit.
Did you run the power and antenna cables thru the bottom of the centre console, or along the passenger door sill, I assume the former?

I ran the antenna cable through the firewall grommet just above steering column, same one as used for Traxide rear power cable and TowPro cables.
UHF power was spliced off the Traxide cable so that the UHF can be powered with vehicle off but if you're running power from cranking battery then the same firewall grommet would suit.
Once inside the cabin behind the steering wheel it is relatively simple to pass cables across to passenger side behind the centre console because there is a large void back there.
Then you can run along the bottom edge of the floor console until you're beside the passenger seat and then duck under to your head unit.

I am always very nervous about pulling things apart for fear of not being able to get them back together again, or worse still pulling too hard on something and breaking a connector which I invariably do. Getting access to the firewall from inside the vehicle is my next challenge i.e. what to remove from under the drivers side near steering column etc to expose the ingress point.
BTW, there must also be an ingress point on the left hand side of the firewall as this is where the cabling for my Anderson plug is run. This is behind the battery box, but is not clearly visible.
I'll try to get a bit braver and have a crack at this tomorrow :)

The panel under steering column just pulls outwards when grabbed near the top.
Only issue: the metal clips can easily spring off and get lost. Usually easy to find once you remove the smaller panel below that one, which you will need to do to pass cables across behind the console.
The driver side grommet is easy to find and use. There's a couple of good photos in the D4 Electric Brake thread that I've copied here:

Yeah where is that passenger side access?
I want to run permanent power from the second battery to a terminal block behind the glovebox (a la BMKal) for things like the UHF and dash cam, but I don't want to have to go right across the engine bay and back again - plus the driver side grommet is already getting crowded with brake controller and rear power from the second battery (perhaps I should just splice into that and be done with it?).

Strydes,or anybody else.
Is the handpeice extension a generic cable or is it a special Icom product???
Mine is on the short side too.

Hi Andrew,
It is an Icom extension cable but not that special. You could use any Ethernet extension cable with a male RJ45 one end and female RJ45 on the other. Something like this:
1 5M 5ft Ethernet LAN Male TO Female Network Cable RJ45 Extension Extender Cord | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-5m-5ft-Ethernet-Lan-Male-to-Female-Network-Cable-RJ45-Extension-Extender-Cord-/301706849875?hash=item463f212e53:g:i-EAAOSwFqJWstuF)
Or a normal Male to Male RJ45 Ethernet cable with a coupler like this:
1 PC Simple Useful RJ45 CAT 5 5E Ethernet LAN Cable Joiner Coupler Connector FT5 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-PC-Simple-Useful-RJ45-CAT-5-5E-Ethernet-Lan-Cable-Joiner-Coupler-Connector-FT5-/401037285528?hash=item5d5faf5898:g:YsEAAOSwf-VWYlPR)
Just examples as not sure what length you need... Main issue is where you mount the RJ45 female or coupler- they are a bit chunky!

David

I hadn't thought about an extension. Like Andy, my cable is too short for my liking. Good idea:)

Yep, i'd stick to the extension cable, and avoid the joiner if possible. The joiner just introduces another point of failure and in my experience, these joiners have been responsible for many network failures where users have decided this would be the best way to extend the range of their computer from the network termination point.

Well, not really. It's probably the smallest job I'll ever do on the D4!
Today I changed the screws in my microphone socket from silver to black - much better! :)
Very happy with the position of this in the cup holder (thanks Scott) - keeps it out of the way but also lets anyone in first and second rows use the handset.

Can use the cup holders fine and doesn't really obstruct anything.

David what do you think of the IC-450N. Would you recommend it? I have next to no experience with these vehicle mounted CB's. Am only used to handheld Motorola's at work which are worth a small fortune and run encrypted channels.
I was looking at one of these GME ones TX3350UVP + AE4018k3 Antenna Ultimate Value Pack (http://www.prestigecom.net.au/tx3350uvp-tx3350-ultimate-value-pack)

I've recently installed an icom IC-450 into my disco. Previously I've had GME's but the last 2 have failed to transmit so thought it about time to change brands. The icom is nice and clear and I seem to have better range with the icom - but I also change the antenna as well so that would make a difference there -although the same dB rating between the two and the new one is installed lower.

I was thinking of attaching the antenna to the RWC, mostly because it would be out of line of sight and not as likely to be snapped off.

More than happy with it. Does everything I need it to do. Clear and range is good. I chose it after reading a few positive opinions on here of the 440. I would say though that one of my friends has a similar GME - I can't recall the exact model- and it seems fine too.

I have the GME TX3350 and have found it very good so far but haven't experienced a IC-450N for comparison.

For those that have a platform rack, I ended up with this.
As long as you have enough play left in the cable it can be moved to the side, front, wherever you like. You pull the spring loaded pin out and it can be folded from any position from vertical to flat.
Just a bit of 5mm (overkill) galvanized plate from Bunnings. Drilling out the 16mm hole was the longest part.
Does anybody know the easiest way to get the ethernet cable from under the seat up under the cup holder?
Cheers

Russ,
I experimented with going from the cupholder void down and from outside coming up into the void and found that coming from the cupholder void and working down towards the outside edge was easier. It is still somewhat fiddly as things are quite congested under there. I passed a wire down first but that really only identified the general route/direction to get through. I was reluctant to attach the ethernet plug to any draw wire for fear of damage and ended up just wriggling it through with patience. You will see what looks like a small vent right towards the bottom edge of the centre console side wall. This is the area where you'll be able to get the cable to appear.
Cheers,
Scott

Thanks! Now i just need to chase down a Female to male 5M ethernet cable and one of those fittings from ebay and i'm done.
Not sure where you found those RJ45 mounts Scott but the only one I can find is this

Tried Jaycar today with no luck. Will order one of these above but it won't be here for a month, coming from China.

I threaded my cable the same way as Scott described using an extra large cable tie.
The connector I used is actually a Female-Female - this one: RJ45 Panel Mount Cat 5 Or Cat 6 Ethernet Cable Sockets Adapter [007591] | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RJ45-Panel-Mount-Cat-5-Or-Cat-6-Ethernet-Cable-Sockets-Adapter-007591-/262477233762?hash=item3d1cdcbe62:g:QxIAAOSwWKtUu6c Q)
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=106316&stc=1&d=1456696902
That allows you to use a standard Male-Male cable

Russ, this is one advantage of the GME UHFs. The unit comes supplied with an RJ45 extension cable and female/female connector in the box.
The one David used is better for a vertical alignment of the connector and mine is better for a horizontal alignment.
The vertical one is a bit easier for mic cord connection into the connector.
The horizontal one is more hidden and less likely to get anything in the connector itself (food/drink/sand/etc).
The horizontal one needs some jiggling during reinstallation of cupholder.
Cheers,
Scott

Spot on. One note though. The ICom comes with a 2.5m Male-Female microphone extension cable.
Regarding the potential ingress of foreign matter, I added one of these dust plugs to cover the socket when I don't have the microphone plugged in: Ethernet Hub Port RJ45 Anti Dust Cover Cap Protector Plug 10Pcs Black WS | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ethernet-Hub-Port-RJ45-Anti-Dust-Cover-Cap-Protector-Plug-10Pcs-Black-WS-/222214036642?hash=item33bcfd1ca2:g:-w0AAOSwHoFXqcVU)

I ended up with a Uniden which came with the same adapter but at 2m long, it finished just behind the passenger seat as I've mounted it in the rear for ease of wiring power from traxide and aerial to roof..

Mine is mounted in the rear too (where rear air con unit would normally fit) for the same reasons. I used a 5m Male-Male cable run through the sill and under the seat to minimise the number of joins in the cable.

Hi Russ
Good spot for the connector. I think in mine there was a locating plastic stake in that front space?
If you PM me your address I'll post you some black screws
Assuming you used the same connector as me IIRC it's a weird #4 gauge or something like that- took me a while to find. I had to order a pack lot so have spares.

Yup David there was a locator there, good news is once you make a cut and widen it enough for the plug, it makes a snug fit just like the original locator.
Yes the same plug! Thanks for that. Had no idea where I'd find one.
TBH The only reason I changed the location to the other side was that i couldn't imagine how I was going to make the slit cutout required without butchering it. The plastic is actually quite easy to work with I later found out and can be gradually sculpted into the perfect shape no matter where you mount it. I found a 5mm drill piece made for a neater cut than a small file although had to use both.

Just to record it in this thread, the black screws that fit the Female-Female RJ45 connector are #4-40 length 1/2" (I think 3/4" also ok) like these:
