The leather/plastic holder (with screw) on my HSE 4.6 gearknob selector is cracked, and the hair spring on the chrome selector pivot is separately also broken.

Is this a regular failure on the P38? The securing screw could have been tightened too hard as the plastic seems to be brittle, unless there's a vibration issue. Does any know?

I've spoken to a couple of wreckers but they're gone or broken, unless I am lucky later on. I new one from the UK will be around AUD$230-270 with shipping.

I don't know that it's a known issue. I replaced the plastic gear knob on my car with a leather bound one about 12 years ago. The original wasn't broken, I just wanted the upgrade. It didn't cost that much off eBay. (No, I'm not selling the old knob.)

The set screw for the gear selector knob cover from new was always cracking mainly due to over tightening
Age will also be a factor as most will be at this point now

Ill have a look to see if i have my old knob. I also replaced it with a leather one. You can have it if you want it.

Thanks all.

Ron, the leather on the top of mine is fine, but the plastic covering the chrome selector is cracking more over time, so I need to replace it or repair it, and the prices of the few available used ones seem to be increasing. I'll see if I can find something similar that you used.

Peter, I agree as mine was overtightened and cracked. I small amount of screw lock anaerobic fluid would have dealt with that without the damage to the plastic retainer.

davidsonsm, thanks for your offer. I would be grateful for yours as it may be more secure than mine is at the moment. Please let me know the postage fees and I'll EFT it to you.

Regards, Gary.

Doesn't that stuff damage plastics?

I don't know Ron. I'll see if there's any information on the makers website. My intention though is to put the fluid between the screw and the metal transmission shift/shaft and avoid to spread the fluid on the plastic.
