What axle stands to use?

I was all set yesterday to remove the rear wheels on the D3 and following Bodsy's Brake Bible (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic52130.html?highlight=Bodsy+Brake+bible) have a go at adjusting the Electronic Park Brake.

I didn't get very far. The 2 Tonne (each) stands from Aldi that I bought some time ago are simple not tall enough at 430mm to allow the rear wheel to get off the ground.

It really is quite surprising how high you have to lift these cars up to get the wheels clear of the ground.

Incidentally, did try to get a jack under the lower rear wishbone to lift the wheels, but there's not really a good jacking point there, and when I tried, it lifted off the axle stand under the chassis, which I din't like, so I backed off.

Anyway, my question is, what axle stands do people use and how high to they go?

I use a set rated at 3t that I bought from super cheap a couple of years ago. They fit well under the chassis at collapsed height, and extended a bit will get the wheel off the ground. Also have a set of 5t truck stands, but rarely use them as they are too high collapsed...

Now that you have it on the stands, put the jack under the control arm and jack the wheel up;)

On most occasions as soon as you start jacking, the wheel will rise on it's own.

Baz, I tried that using a bottle Jack under the rear wishbone. Firstly I didn't really like where I had to place the Jack. (In the dimple underneath was the only place where it looked even half-safe), and secondly, it didn't just lift the wheel, it lifted the chassis off the stand on one side also. - it all felt unsafe using that approach so I stopped.

I think mine are Kinchrome. They are tall enough, but the adjustments for height are very coarse. They are well priced and so they will do me.

I hope you get it sorted BSM. Could you put a chock under the jack and go again, then do the same with the axle stand to secure it?
