Just returned from a long trip out to Birdsville from Adelaide up the famous track.

Hitched a ride out to Poeppell Corner on the famous MAN recovery truck...

A very nice chap in a very nice Defender TD5 had snapped an axle and had to be recovered.

Poor fellow.

Anyway... It's me not the owner in this pic.

Good trip, a few ferrals at Birdsville but an interesting trip and one to strike off the list.

That MAN is unbelievable.

Maybe something like our new ADF trucks, replacing Mack/Unimog.

Wow..... Last time I saw that truck it had a 100s cruiser on the back of it...... Now its had 2 LR's on it..... I guess it can happen to anyone's 4wd if if they are unlucky enough to break down in the desert.....

I wonder how far "off-track" he could recover a vehicle such as a Defender?

Anywhere a deefer can go, this thing can go with one on its' back?.. so long as it's not less than 8 feet wide.

I wonder how far the Defender could have got removing the broken part and on very low tyre pressure?

He tried, and got about 30 metres before it dug in.

Front wheel drive only in a 3.5t defender in dune country really isn't ideal.

Of course, all the smart ass Nissota bevans in Birdsville were smug.

They shouldn't be. Every time I've been there I've seen a recovered Toyota parked next to that recovery truck. Last time was a rolled 100 Series.

On the same trip we saw a 70 Series limping out with broken rear springs and a destroyed tailshaft and then there was the snapped like a twig Triton that limped into Dalhousie.

Saw quite a few Defenders and they were all going strong. :D

Overloading and driving too fast are the main issues. For some reason people like to take 1.5 tonnes of stuff they don't really need.

Then there was the 80 Series driver who thought he was....ahhh...what's the point. They are a different breed altogether :(

Nisota crowd tend to have short memories and Grandpas Axe Syndrome

Just finished a ribbing from a young fella with a Cruiser...
Who on the weekend needed help when his radiator burst open and was towed home...

Its also recently had CVs, Rear shaft, Diff centre and some electrical gremlins fixed...

But my LR is unreliable apparently ;) I just smiled...

I have my grandpa's axe. My dad replaced the handle and I replaced the head. It's in really good condition for something so old.

whats this?

They've replaced everything but its still the good old Cruiser..

With Grandpas axe...
Essentially its had the head replaced 3 times, and the handle 5 times..
But its still Grandpas Axe... (Eg. Nothing of the original)

Another version is that Grandpa still has the same axe that he bought back in 1955.

It has had two new heads and five new handles.

EDIT: Looks like Tombie can type faster than I can. :)

The bloke who gave me Schtick was in 100 series 6.5 diesel with a busted tail shaft and a centre diff that wasn't working. I reminded him of this but he just stared at me likeI was speaking a different language.

There's no reaching some people.

Was he doing anything that would cause it to break..... or was it an "age" thing or just plain bad luck??

I always like to know what causes these sort things so I'm aware and hopefully I can avoid the same thing happening to me.....

I think the problem with the invincible attitude when it comes to common vehicles such as the dominant Nissan/Toyota/Mitsubishi/whatever is that a breakdown is an exceptional circumstance, i.e. there are so many in circulation (majority on-road, as expected) that a breakdown is unusual. Perhaps justified.
A broken one? What the? People transpose that attitude to "The Offroad"

Any problems with these vehicles therefore must be and "act of god",or just plain "bad luck" - not something that the manuafacturer has much influence on.

So people have been conditioned into thinking a Toyota breakdown is "**** happens" where a LR product is an inherant fault.

Had some mates drive up from Perth to Kalgoorlie on the Holland Track the weekend before last. They were to be part of a group of 20 or so vehicles.

The first of my mates had to withdraw from the trip before they left Perth - he owns a 3.0 litre Nissan Patrol, and the engine suffered the not unheard of "grenade" syndrome.

The second was driving a late model TRD HiLux with a supercharged 4.0 litre V6 petrol engine. I got a phone call from him early on the Sunday morning. "Is there anyone in Kalgoorlie open on a Sunday who sells rear wheel bearings for a HiLux, and anyone open with a bearing press". He was on his way in to town in another vehicle with an axle out of his HiLux having been forced to leave it on the side of the track some 150km the other side of Coolgardie.

For a while, it looked like our best option might have been to hire another HiLux and remove a rear axle from it, and sort it all out on Monday. But I managed to find two wheel bearings at Repco when they opened. Nobody open with a bearing press though, so the job was done in my shed. Angle grinder and cold chisel to remove the remains of the old bearing, and a brass drift and FBH to fit the new one.

Got him out of trouble and back to Perth ...................... and there was zero hanging of crap on Land Rovers by the group. :D

Bloke at work is getting his RAV4 fixed due to recall on back suspension; it can fail and kill people. Rang Toyota due to issues with them needing the car for a week without providing a courtesy car. First question Toyo rep asked was which recall. So they are struggling to build a modern reliable car that can compete.

Nope for the Truck driver having to deal with Nuf Nuf`s that insist on sitting in the Blind spot next to trucks . Mainly those Pretend 4wdrivers:p

To which I would add, quite possibly overloaded and tyres too hard.

They have not even a half of the capability of the 110.

What about the MAN trucks?
I am sure we are all interested if our tax is being wasted or lives being put at risk because of wrong choices.

EDIT: $1.58 billion on the trucks

Some of the 8x8 variants are too heavy for our roads and we can't get the permits.
At least ours will have coil springs.
The kiwi's last year were complaining about how rough the ride is on our roads in their MAN's. But they are on leaf springs.

This thread reminds me of chatting to a bloke in Kalbarri who reckoned his 60 or 80 series was bullet proof, then he went on to tell me of the time he'd got towed off Preston beach by a Nissan when his gearbox **** itself.
I asked him why his 'bullet proofs" bonnet was open....."Just a little tinkling noise" he said.
Then later he had to admit when it was taken away and checked a piston head parted company with the bottomhalf!
In Broome when I had a 300 Tdi Disco a bloke in the caravan park saucily told me "You're brave mate, leaving Perth in one of those things hahahaha".
Didn't answer when I said in my best toffee nosed accent "May I remind you, mate, that I'm not the one whose vehicle's had it's bonnet open for 2 days awaiting assistance".
He never spoke to me again. :D
And I've been called a troll on Exploroz for daring to mention the engine and gearbox probs of our boys 200 series which took 3 years with 3 months off the road for Toyota to fix.
I store these little things up and bring them out when necessary. :D

16 year old heavy vehicle, off road, it had a salisbury and it had twisted the diff side off the short axle. Hit the whoops before a big dune and snap!!!

The bloke who owns the MAN says he tows them all and is not biased. Used to own Landys... every brand comes in with a problem. Which is about the most balanced response I have ever heard. And as for parts availability... nobody has much more in stock in the boonies than you would have in your average parts kit so all the Toyota parts availability is Horse poop. In the big centres maybe.

It's usually a more age related overloading issue than anything else. I think Land Rover drivers tend to take old vehicles into more demanding locations.
