Hi Guys,
We are driving our Perenties to the Cape York on the 1st of October and I am after some help regarding one of our vehicles.
We have a 1/2 ton trailer that was donated by the Sally man and our tow vehicle needs a touch more power.
I have spoken to KLR about a turbo kit but they will not have them in time, as time is precious at the moment I want to know if anyone has a turbo on their 4bd1 and would be willing to send some photos/point me in the right direction of photos for a tubo install.
Thus far I have a manifold on order from Patterson Cheney ISUZU and thats about it, would relay like an assist here.
Cheers

you dont need it and you most likely dont have time to install it and sort everything else you'll need to.
spill time and extra degree of advance on the crank an then wind the fuel screw about 1/4-1/3 a turn set idleb to 750-800 RM

+1 for no need for a turbo. The only reason i would turbo is so I can sit on 80 up hills on the road and not drop back to 3rd . Off road there is no need for it. Maybe if your running big tires but on 235s or 750s its fine. I run out of traction before running out of power in the right gear

Turbo drastically reduces the noise of the motor, I would consider that a key advantage if you're planning a long trip but the power is ok without one. Off road no difference unless in sand.

That's interesting about the engine noise. If you are going turbo wouldn't you go a high flow exhaust to match? I have a set of Bluetooth ear muffs for long hwy stints . cuts the noise to nothing and I can listen to tunes

Yep I've got an exhaust to match from KLR. Doesn't make it any louder though.

I think if you went from scratch you can probably do a turbo upgrade in two weeks and two weekends. That'll be waiting for parts the first week, install that weekend, order more parts that were forgotten and get exhaust made, finish up following weekend.
Well that's my plan anyway. Your a week down and two and a half left, better get a move on ;) I start mine next weekend so we'll have a race!

I disagree. Off road definitely needs a turbo. Sand dunes, or sand hill climbs, or short run ups on obstacles, and you'll stall before the top.

Just got back from a 3 week trip. The perentie was faultless I drove the old coach up, OTT up and back, frenchmans both ways and the creb north to south. Passed another perentie not far from the tip. My motor hasn't had any work just regular maintenance but I have done some minor suspension mods but nothing major. I'd happily tow your trailer for you tomorrow and do it all again.
