I have a 2007 RRS and have been looking at a better hitch for it. I read that people had issues getting hold of the Mitchell Bros hitch and were using an alternative hitch.
I called them the other day and spoke to them about there hitch and they did have issues with their manufacturer.
All is good now apparently and they have got a new batch of hitches through with another run in the process now as well.
There is a hitch on the market that is very similar to the Mitch Hitch that has been ripped off the Mitch Hitch the reason I mention this is I believe people should avoid the copied hitch.
Customer service over the phone was excellent at Mitchell Bros and mines on its way.

I had the same experience, called them up and the service was fantastic. I didn't want to buy the copy but needed one before the next batch was going to be ready so they went out of their way to get me sorted.
It's clearly a very well engineered product and ignoring that it was a necessity to get the hitch up to the height I need, it also gives me a lot more confidence that the 3t hanging of the back will still be there when I arrive.
When you do the install... cutting in half and trimming the plastic cover to suit is very easy and keeps it all looking good when the electrics aren't required.

I love my D4, but seriously, it's not a pretty vehicle.
From the inside looking out, who cares?
The Mitch Hitch, well, not pretty either. In fact, it's like a wart on an ugly arse on a D4.
Not sure it "sits out of the way" either. I reckon it's a shin buster.
If I wanted pretty, RRS, no question.
Practical, then D4, with Mitch Hitch.
Flaming expected.....

I paid for mine today too so I'll find out if it does.
At least that will make a change from the tongue on the D2 - that keeps dislocating my kneecaps :(

No it won't, will sit out just as far as the D2, maybe further if you use the same tounge from your D2;)

I don't see the issue with the Mitch Hitch, looks fine to me, no worse than any other tow hitch on the market, besides how else are you going to lock the tounge in, if the hitch doesn't poke out from the bumper.

Anyway here's what it will look like on the standard bumper.

I intend to leave it in place as I do on the D2. What it looks like doesn't bother me - I have it in place so I can use it at anytime.
My comment was purely as I said - with the height of the D2, the towball almost takes my kneecap off if I hit it. :(

Yep no worries, won't be far off your knee though, I had a 4" lift on my D2, and I didn't change my tongue when going to the D4 with the Mitch Hitch, so keep in mind it's there, or wear knee pads, it's higher than you would think:)
I have a Kaymar bar and twin wheel carriers, so the spare wheels protects my knee caps:cool:
Great hitch though, especially when offroad.

Thanks Baz.
Having had a look at the D3 (even at access height) then I agree it will be fairly high - which is why I bought the Mitch Hitch.
Due to the extent of my inherited, degenerative duck's disease I'm more than happy if my knees continue to be at risk :p

Best bit Baz... with the wheel carrier on the back you're more likely to miss it...

Anyone considered fitting something like this to provide less of an impact to knees when not towing. Many variants out there for hitches and tongues. Most extend the obstruction out even further though, but could possibly be modified. Maybe Mitchell Bros could come up with their own design? Or maybe I will when I get their hitch!

Taking the tongue out and then hitting the hitch means you are essentially walking too close to the vehicle and risking damage to paint etc anyway...
Never understood why people walk so close to the damn cars in the car parks etc..

And to quantify - years ago I ran between to vehicles parked at night...
I still have the dent in the bone... I went arse over tit at about 15 km/h into a roadway...
Even the memory of the pain send shivers down my spine...

Just thinking about it sends shivers down mine, but also makes me laugh at the same time :)

Damn tow hitch usually sknarks the knee or shin bone when the car is parked in the garage and I just wanna sneak around the back while the garage door is shut.
Always ends in blood and tears and bad words.
****ing always.

Something like that would be quite handy if one had a roof rack.
Never seen them before.
Thanks

It is for this reason I won't leave an unused tow hitch left in either Disco. Too dangerous and only a matter of time before it will lead to victims wanting compensation.
I suspect this is why the D3/D4 has such a strange design....to avoid litigation in the US market.

Also against the Road Traffic Act...
There are fines and points for leaving it in and not in use.

Saving him a fine might be my excuse if the neighbour keeps parking the arse of his navara over the footpath outside our house and I'm obliged to help myself to the tongue...

Is that the SA Road Traffic Act?
Other states may be the same but I do not believe there is anything in the NT Traffic Act that says they have to be removed.

And using that analogy does that mean the Mitch hitch has to be removed when not in use (as it projects outside the OEM vehicle footprint? :-/

HI Guys - actually my first post however.. when deciding on what to do about the tow hitch on my LR3.. it is really all about the height specifically (and removing the farmers plough after the shock of seeing it after taking delivery of the disco!) for towing my 4x4 camp trailer which is quite high at 600-710mm normal ride... I was looking for a post with the heights that the Mitch Hitch achieved - or others, from what I could tell searching the forum and what people told me over the phone it was "about" 500mm from the ground to the top of the standard tongue which I thought wasn't enough, so I was contemplating getting a larger drop hitch turned upside down etc.. however I wasn't sure if this was going to then hit the tail gate etc.. etc.. I just went and ordered one throwing caution (and potentially a bunch of cash) into the wind, when it arrived two days later from ordering over the phone.. I have to report I was very happy with it after fitting it I highly recommend the hitch to any one... regardless of the heights.. The reason for the post is to put a few pics up on the heights - these measurements are taken with the standard set of 17" wheels and tyres 99% tread & the standard airbag suspension on my LR3 and near perfectly level ground. Obviously results may differ slightly for each rig so use a guide.
Normal Ride Height ~606mm to top face of hitch
Low Ride Height ~558mm to top face of hitch
High Ride Height ~645mm to top face of hitch
Pics attached. Have a good day! :)
P.S. I'm really enjoying the AULRO community, I'm a new LR owner also who is busy fitting out my LR3 from standard which I'm also enjoying..

Tried to do it last weekend but the bush wouldn't fit. Rang them Tuesday to be told I need to use a die grinder even though the instructions say 'Disco 4 only'
Did that today and all fitted. Covered half of the inboard reversing sensors rather than turn them ;)

I did have a Mitch Hitch but gave it to a mate. I make do with the OE plough now, but I have fitted a Mc Hitch auto coupler. The setup works well and has no overhead clearance issues. It also keeps hitch up dramas to a minimum. ( no arguements with the other half )

No, but the tongue is required to be removed when not in use...
