Well the old ute is looking a bit worse for wear. Went over to West Cranbourne to look at some houses for sale. Coming home along Cams road, crossed over the rail line, a car came out of a road on my left and I used his crumple zones to absorb some of the impact. Was (for real ) a ninety year old male driving and his eighty six year old missus. He was meant to give way, but did not even slow down. Good thing though is we are all still around to tell the tale. They have some minor injuries, bit of bruising, shook up as you would expect. He has a lump on his head. Because of there age they where taken to hospital for observation. I have a bit of a sore wrist. As my ute hmmm nasty. Bent the bull bar back to the tyre, stuffed the left guard and pushed the left door back so it will not open. Still as they say, cars can be replaced.

Damn
Glad nobody is badly injured. Hard hit to do that sort of damage.

Good to hear everyone is ok.
Regarding your wrist, I learned something new the other week doing a driving course through work:
Most people grip the wheel with the thumb inside the circle of the wheel. The ideal way is with the thumbs on the outside of the wheel, or along the circumference of the wheel. Reason being, In a crash, having the thumbs inside can rip ligaments and cause damage- especially to the smaller bones in the wrist like the scaphoid (which has very little bloodflow, needs 6 months and a pin to heal).
Furthermore, modern vehicle design also has a void behind the driver's hands when in the 'quarter to two' position to deflect the hands away from the dash in an impact, reducing injuries, and keeping the occupant in the right position when airbags deploy.

None of this applies for a defender... but something I didn't know and thought it might be good to share. Hopefully your injuries heal up quick and well.

Good thing no injuries but hope transport dept remove his license. If you were on a pushy or a scooter/ mcycle it'd be a different outcome. Have no time for the bleeding hearts 'let them have their independence ' line. Somebody could've been killed.

Hard hit to do that sort of damage. Yeah for him it was like stepping in front of a train. For me I only realised at the last moment that the dozy sod was not stopping as I had my eye already up the road a bit. Which left no time to slow down any. I was doing fifty k`s as it was as I was approaching a main intersection. From what I heard he will be charged for failing to give way and have his license reviewed. Which giving his age means no more driving.

Saw one of the local older ladies driving across the Williams river bridge the other day,on the wrong side of the road. She was lucky there was no traffic as the bends in the hwy dont give a good sight line.
Have also seen an older gent cross the bridge in his gopher,in the traffic lane not on the footpath:eek::eek::eek::eek:
Roadtrains pass thru town constantly,I dont enjoy passing one on the bridge in the grader, not alot of spare real estate.

Y'reckon?
If only.
Wait n see.
Don't hold your breath.

Hopefully the old coot's car is stuffed enough to prevent him trying again.

And he'd argue he'd be a good driver because he's been out there for 77 years and never had a prang before. Or maybe he's just lucky.

That ised to get me about the 'safe driver 25yrs ' rac stickers you see on old corollas with venetian blinds and bowling hats on the parcel shelf doesn't mean that they haven't CAUSED hundreds of prangs over their no claim 25yrs of driving 😠😠😠😠

Good thing to learn. Especially true for four wheel drives and font wheel drives, as road irregularities can whip the wheel, causing the spokes to injure your thumb.
Cheers, Billy.

Many such safe drivers never have an accident............. But they sure do see a lot.

Oh yeah it is well stuffed. There was bits of early Mazda 6 all over the place. Hit his car just in front of the right wheel. Reckon it wont be real straight any more.

Good to hear all ok.

The thumb issues you learn very quickly in series landies with no power steer, you hit a hole that jerks the wheel and it will spin around hard into your thumbs.:D That's in low range or at parking speeds against angled gutters, you soon imagine the impact potential if your front wheels are hit at speed.

I'm not approaching that age,.........Yet!
However, IMHO, there's far too much emphasis on older drivers, but I'm certainly NOT excluding the driver the subject of this post,...they are certainly out there.
But as far as I'm concerned, & Wifey & I do about 30Ks a year, We see far far more young drivers driving poorly, than we do "oldies".

Pickles the only difference with the "oldies" is they got there first before us.

Went and got my work tools from the ute today. I had a closer look at the damage. Chassis is bent. Front cross member has a decent wrinkle in it. So it is time to draw the curtains around the old ute and get the rifle out. I will see it the insurance mob will let me but it back though as there is a lot of good gear to salvage. So will be looking for a County or the like if any one is selling.

As it will be their insurance, you should have salvage rights, they need to pay out the value of the damage, and it is up to you what happens with the money and ute, as it is over 15 years old it won't go on the WOVR register, so you can re-chassis and fix it up.

Will be more than just re chassis as it it a custom build. Range rove under neath, Isuzu engine and custom suspension. So would need re engineering as well. Could be done, but I don`t have the time for it.

Broke my thumb that way when I was t-boned by another vehicle once.

I took the keys off my Dad when his driving deteriorated to that point.

My name was mud with lots of stories spread to the wider family, but so be it, there was no way I could have some innocents death on his or my head.

Luckily my sister and partner agreed.
